Chance The Rapper Project #5
After his burnout following The Big Day, we basically heard nothing from him since 2019, Star Line is probably his most grounded album to date. Taking small bits of inspiration from his previous works, Star Line really feels like a "Chance The Rapper" album, from its adlibs, deep cut messages hidden behind comedy, frequent collaborators, gospel inspiration, and flow choices.
While the album runs a bit too long in my opinion, this project really feels ... read more
(This review was written with the context that the Album Movie experience was my full listening experience alongside Grandma Tash!)
Honestly, my relationship with Quadeca is very weird. I either think he is a musical genius at times that produces music which resonates with a deep part of my being, other times I can't stand his production style and want to rip off my headset.
Vanisher, Horizon Scraper reinforces that trend for me. It took me quite a while to get into the vibe of this ... read more
A few tracks aside, this album actually has some really cool and interesting beats that sadly are wasted on a beyond lackluster project.
Weezy continues to be the worst part of things he works on.
Not sure If I was expecting worse or not, but it's mostly listenable.
Blake as an artist is so prominent in the mainstream country scene that no matter the level of quality he releases, it'll see play and have some fans; and that's not entirely unwarranted with this record.
It has some redeeming qualities, such as strong instrumentation, sentimental value, and pretty catchy melodies.
But it's flaws are also on full display.
Adlib country words, generic guitar strings, and ... read more
Didn't read the feature list prior to the listen so I was really caught off guard by the Kevin Abstract feature!
Overall though, it's a really chill Art/Glitch Pop time that lands itself nicely into the "tronica" genre.
Can blend into the background at time, but I think that's for it's benefit! Just turn on and vibe.
Really cool!
Fav Track(s): Sophia, Liar? ❤️
Usual Matt Maltese sound, just a bit slower and more horny.
Not my favorite release by him as the lyrical topics are pretty uniform, but it makes for pretty decent background music.
I'll admit my interest with FIFTY FIFTY stems from Starry Night and my obsession with Cupid, so I gave this a listen.
....It's not great. I wouldn't call it generic, it's kind of unique and has it's own style to it, but the choruses (which is a key component in fun K-pop) were just very lackluster, low energy, and didn't seem like the girls even had fun singing on this Ep.
Despite being a Sleep Token enjoyer, I'm not a super-fan and didn't just defend everything the band produced. That being said; where does the massive dislike for this album come from? The people claiming this album lost the meaning of Alt-Metal are the same people who either only listen to intangibles, or turn this off and go listen to BMTH. (Which is very similar vibe.)
While definitely being more Pop coded, 'Even in Arcadia' is some of the most somber and accessible Alt ... read more
With the exception of the four minute long Flex Entertainment intro on Track 1, this was actually some of the most fun I've had listening to a JPEG associated project. Some turn your brain off and vibe Glitch Hop with some actually pretty cool mixing decisions.
Don't understand the "mid" reception to this. Honestly the most listenable JPEG and co collab that I've ever listened to.
This really feels more like the sequel to Sugar World.
While under the moniker of Yung Lean, the production, lyrics, style and performance really comes off as a Jonatan leandoer96 project.
Once again fully embracing the drunk uncle singing at karaoke persona, "Jonatan" may not be album of the year, but it's charm and its encouraging way to get you to sing along makes it album of the heart.
I really enjoy this niche and I hope it's something he continues to execute and ... read more
Pretty decent with quite a few influences and a couple switch-ups, but failed to capture my attention.
While it sounds fine sonically. Sable, fABLE is an Art Pop/Indie album that lacks identity at times and is a bit too boring for my personal tastes.
I actually want to really love this, but I don't.
There are so many cool melodic Digicore moments that tickle the brain, but its almost TOO BUSY. I understand that its a Digicore-Hyperpop hybrid and that's going to make it less accessible by design, but there are multiple moments on this album where we found a very ambient medium of noise and melody, but then the tracks just seem to give up on themselves and go full chaos for no real reason.
It gets to a point of blending together ... read more
After slowly warming up to Haunted Mound and Cloud Rap in general, being quite a fan of Ghost Mountain's project earlier this year, I think I've learned that Sematary is actually a detriment to their sound and might be the weakest one in their genre-sphere.
While the lead vocalist sounds a bit like Damon Albarn at times; And the Adjacent Possible is a chill time with some really immersive moments like Track 5
An engaging and lyrically aggressive experience, Ashanti's delivery is the equivalent of non-stop punching. Each flow is powerful, angry and vulnerable.
Dissecting a variety of topics I couldn't even begin to get into in this review, you would be doing yourself a huge disservice by skipping this record. Experimental but accessible.
Fav Track(s): 9th Heaven ❤️
I knew nothing of Thornhill before this but I saw the tags Alt and Nu Metal and had to check it out!
Sounding like if Deftones mixed with BMTH and they were a 2000's Nu Metal band; the influences on this record are really noticeable.
From the metal chord progressions, the echoey vocals, minor synth instrumentations, and heavy drums if you're a fan of the genre of just want to feel nostalgia, Bodies is the album for you.
While it can come off a bit generic at times and takes a bit to ... read more
Remi continues to impress me with the courage he has to dip his feet into so many different genres. While my reception to his music has been hit or miss, it's still cool to see an artist work on what they like doing instead of restricting themselves to one hole.
That being said. Let's listen to 811-Cloud 84
Remi or ReMark as I'll refer to him for the rest of this review has a knack for production and ambiance. Despite whatever criticizes about ReMark as a performer that I have, ... read more
