Man, this is so good. It's an exploration of loneliness, hatred, war, childhood, parenthood, and how all of those things interact in such a fundamental and impactful way. It shows how much the things that hurt us in our childhood can hurt us in adulthood and the horrible things that can happen as a result. The songs are short and, like the central metaphor, they build up the whole of the album in a very one-at-a-time- fashion, so the final product is very much greater than the sum of its ... read more

It really feels like they found themselves by this point. Blue October brings something extremely unique to the rock genre, and that is the violin. I love how it’s implemented in this album. It transforms the sound from something we’ve all heard a hundred times to something that’s so distinct, yet familiar at the same time. Justin’s vocals are also extremely good and the songs are bangers.

I never want to do this ever again.
Have you ever sat in a waiting room? Not just sat down, waited for a bit, and then gotten up. I mean, have you REALLY sat in a waiting room? How long was your longest time in one of those? Thirty minutes? An hour? It's really boring. Time suddenly screeches to a halt, and, unlike if you've actually been doing something, every single second becomes something you pay keen attention to, rather than ... read more
I don’t really get why this is so highly rated. Out of the couple Elliott Smith albums I’ve heard, this is easily the worst. That doesn’t make it bad—I love some of these songs—but the overall product is bloated and most of the songs are forgettable. I do love some of these songs though. Everything Means Nothing to Me and Son of Sam are standout tracks that are really fantastic. Really the thing that carries this album is just that Elliott cannot physically make ... read more
i… wow… i thought the original song was bad, but like, not the worst… this is very bad
So here's the thing. I probably don't get this one. Or at least a good chunk of it. So if you're reading this, and you feel like you can provide some insight, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know what you think---because I did have some issues with it that aren't consistent with the Kendrick that many of us know. Here are my first impression thoughts:
-I noticed a lot of references to how Kendrick has no respect for those who support or defend Drake and what ... read more
My relationship with half•alive is really unique. I found them before I had any sort of variety in my music taste, and they were my favorite band for a long time; I still love their music, but since finding them, I've listened to albums and artists that I connect with much more. In addition to that, this album is likely the most pressure they've ever had on a release; after the relatively disappointed reviews and horrendous rollout of their previous album, half•alive had to ... read more
I did not enjoy listening to this album. In fact, it’s by far the hardest album to listen to that I’ve ever finished, excluding bad music. The scale of human suffering that this brings is so painful that it doesn’t matter that the music sounds great—I love getting emotional to art, but this… I don’t ever want to hear again, under any circumstance. the baggage is too much, I don’t want to think about it, I just want to forget, and I felt that way for ... read more
I don't even want to rate shit like this. it's better to not even have it on my profile because I don't want to think about it or consider it as if it exists

This is his lowest 2/100 ever, for reference. Damn. This went from the funniest onision album, to having one of the worst streaks of songs ever. That's how a lot of his albums go, but still. I really had hope for this one until "So In Love," which basically ushered in 20 minutes and eight songs of complete misery. It sucks because this could've been his best material, although "material" is a fucking stretch because of how ... read more
I love ERB and this battle is honestly a classic
This album is so special on a level I can't fully describe; Elliott Smith has crafted something truly incredible with this. Every single guitar note, drum hit, vocal, and *sound* is incredible. I've never heard something that sounds THIS perfect. Elliott was a very kind and chill person who had a clear passion for making music. He didn't do it out of ego, for money, or anything like that---his music is purely for the art of it, and this album makes you feel like you're right ... read more

Well. It's certainly bad. Luckily, it's like... one of his best. Definitely not his worst. So that's something I guess. It's really boring. You should know that. It's an incredibly boring album and it sounds awful. That's about it.

This is my mom’s favorite band so I’m gonna be listening to their discography. I thought this was a great debut overall. It suffered from a couple issues, mainly that the instrumental parts were often drawn out. Like, there’s no reason to have a full minute of instrumental before your rock song when the verse has the same instrumental. On the good side, I liked the lyrics a lot, ESPECIALLY Black Orchid. What a fucking good song.

What an incredibly evocative piece. It feels like you're being eaten alive by your emotions in the middle of a wild jungle, feeling everything there is to be felt. I love the music and I love the lyrics
