Porter Robinson - Hollowheart

Haunting, devastating.

Porter Robinson - SMILE! :D

Embarrassing. There are good ideas sprinkled throughout, but not enough for full songs, let alone an album. Cheerleader, Knock Yourself Out, and (maybe) Mona Lisa stand out as fully realized (or at least close to it). Even then, Knock Yourself Out is, like the rest of the album, so derivative and wanting that it feels wasted. The writing, again, has strong moments in most of the songs. A nice melody here, an interesting movement there. But still, wholly unfinished. A lot of the production, but ... read more

Porter Robinson - Russian Roulette

This shit is fucking embarrassing.

Wavedash - Tempo

About as good as this kind of project gets for me. Eclectic and weird, it's just a cool collection of ideas. The production is varied and interesting throughout. There is a tiny bit of cohesion in the first and second halves, but not much - that probably comes with the format. I'm hoping that Wavedash continues exploring new and strange sounds, they seem like they're having fun doing it.

Wavedash - World Famous Tour
70

The best parts of this release are the explorations into new directions. Most of the tracks feature interesting arrangement and more diverse songwriting than their previous works. The lean into degraded synths and effects definitely feels like the group is settling into and refining their fundamentals, but the sampling work on songs like Dummo Loop and Satin Cash is what creates a really unique sound. I hope this is only the beginning for Wavedash's artistry.

Casio Dad - he's not with us anymore

Although this feels, in many ways, like practice or a precursor working toward to the first glass beach album, after spending time with it, I've decided that, for me, it stands on equal footing by its own merits. The writing and lyrics remain unbelievably strong, and the fun instrumentation and arrangements completely compensate for some of the more amateur elements on the EP. Ends of the Earth sticks out as a bit of an outcast, when compared with the other tracks, but I feel lucky that it was ... read more

glass beach - the first glass beach album

Much of the songwriting, instrumentation, and lyricism is so beyond me, it feels magical. I cannot overstate those strengths. Fantastic production from song to song, although it feels slightly disjointed as an overall album. The immense variety is simultaneously a great strength of the record for me though, so I can't fault it too much. I know I will continue discovering intricacies throughout this album for a long time, and I look forward to it.

Just Friends - Gusher

Not much to say. Juvenile songwriting, in a bad way. Lazy and uninspired from top to bottom.

Porter Robinson - Easy

The greatest house song ever written.

Porter Robinson & Madeon - Shelter

We just downright won the lottery that Porter and Madeon came together at the right time to create something so magical.

Enter Shikari - The Spark

In many ways, I consider this record to remain as the band's most politically resonant. The songwriting, instrumentation, and performances sound intentional and special on this one. Also strikes a balance between genre staples and a great deal of cool sound sound design. After many listens, my only nitpick is the mildly peculiar album pacing. I can only hope they might find a way to top this effort in the future.

six impala - HATEHATEHATEHATEHATEHATE

Feels like the future of something or another.

PAS TASTA - peanut phenomenon (six impala remix)

This many geniuses on one song is bound to print.

PAS TASTA - GOOD POP
80

Fresh, bizarre, and intriguing. What else can I say?

Madeon - Good Faith
90

An immaculate display of writing, sampling, and production.

Porter Robinson - Nurture
70

Showcases the usual soaring highs of writing and production that Porter is capable of. The record is dragged down, somewhat, by being overly pedantic while feeling simplistic or dull in concept.

Pendulum - Colourfast
90

After spending time with this track, I am pleasantly surprised by what an excellent continuation of the central Pendulum ideas it is. The production, lyrics, vocals, and arrangement all stand out as exploring interesting new directions, or eking out improvements, even amongst a fantastic discography.

glass beach - plastic death

Abandons most everything that previously gave Glass Beach a unique sound. Lyrics and writing remain strong on this release. The majority of the tracks feel self-indulgent for what they are. Vocals are a big step down. The mixing is definitely the lowlight for me. It may be that only a few bands could have conceived this album, unfortunately almost any could have executed it better.

"@Ratrox As above average as I found Nurture, I just find this equally below average. Nurture was also helped by some extremely high moments of both writing and production. And yes, I'm sorry but my opinion is that Russian Roulette is just bad. Of course I'm glad that it reaches other people who get a lot from it. But for me, musically, I find it gross."
