Backxwash - HIS HAPPINESS SHALL COME FIRST EVEN THOUGH WE ARE SUFFERING
85

WOW this album is mindblowing.

It's sinister, abrasive and savage, with industrial harsh sounds that really scratch an itch for me. The most PERFECT album to come out this Halloween weekend.

Also, her delivery is so passionate and cathartic and goes so well with the unrelenting instrumentals on the record. Don't sleep on this one!!!!

Best: VIBANDA, NYAMA, JUJU, NFWITI

also, bonus appraisal for what is probably the sickest album art this year

Wunderhorse - Cub

Really great debut from Wunderhorse, the songwriting and production on this record is honestly top notch. Definitely a band to keep tabs on for sure

Sorry - Anywhere But Here

I've always felt that Sorry have an unmatched warmth and intimacy in their music, with their last record, "925" being a chamber pop masterpiece, and their follow up EP, Twixtustwain, exploring a more experiment sound that had me very intrigued into what they would produce next.

The leading singles are an excellent introduction into what this band is all about, ominous, angsty indie pop that is endearing with a hint of melancholic mystery. Their 3rd single in particular, Key To The ... read more

Converge - Axe To Fall

Not sure how i’ve slept on this band for so long but this album absolutely fucks. This is what metalcore should sound like, an unrelenting brutal 40 minutes or so with a cathartic and rewarding climax. The album has such a succinct and excellent flow to it with each track merging into the next, leaving no room to catch a breath. Very eager to dive into the rest of the bands discography if it is as good as this

Poppy - Stagger

The title track is pretty good, but on the whole this ep falls short. It follows up the pop-punk vibe of Flux, however that album did it much better as these four songs are pretty uninspired.

Poppy is definitely at her best when she isn't being so formulaic, and hopefully she returns to the sounds of I Disagree.

BEST: Stagger
WORST: FYB, Pocket

The 1975 - Being Funny in a Foreign Language
70

Was very hesitant going into this one. I have a love - hate relationship with this band; I love the nostalgia that their old material gives me and how they are always trying to reinvent the wheel with every release, but I hate Matty Healy.

To be fair, Hate is a strong word, but I have always been Healy's harshest critic over the years and have never agreed with how he has conducted himself on the internet and does always make me feel weird about liking the 1975. So, after being put off this ... read more

Jockstrap - I Love You Jennifer B
90

Probably the greatest pop debut I've heard in my twenty three years of existence. There is something here that Jockstrap are doing which is so unique, innovative and fresh that I keep finding myself coming back to this record weeks after its release. The glitchy and punchy instrumentals that Taylor Skye is laying down on tracks like Debra and the explosive 50/50 stand out as some of the bangers of the year - the quality of the production and the twisted electronic sound makes me lose my mind ... read more
