Kep1er, the group made through MNET's latest survival show 'Girls Planet 999', is finally releasing its debut album, after being delayed once and almost a second time. I've watched all episodes, I lost hours of my life over this show, my phone got over-heated by the damn Universe app where I would vote for my picks every single day. I was so excited about seeing these girls I've been rooting for, make their debut. The project is composed of 2,5 new songs (depends if you count the intro as a full song), and 3 new version of the 3 main 'Girls Planet 999' songs. I enjoy all of it and I'm quite happy with the results, I didn't become obsessed for nothing I guess!
Kep1er opens their debut with an intro song that switches between soft, dreamy parts and strong, noisy parts, the loud and deep 808 really isn’t for me so hopefully, these dreamy parts make up for most of it. And then we have that “we are kep1er! this is kep1er!” thing which is fun.
The title track, “WA DA DA”, also starts with a few soft seconds, and then we get directly into its stronger side. I really enjoy the pre-chorus and the vocals are nice. For the chorus, we get something kinda noisy but not too much to me, and it’s very catchy. Then the post-chorus is rather cute so it counterbalances it quite well. Hikaru’s rap doesn’t feel too out of place and this kind of half-time verses are becoming a bit less pre-dominant these days so it doesn’t feel as bothering as it could have felt a year ago. I think that overall it’s a nice mix of girl crush and cute elements, so like teen-crush, I guess. The bridge is nice well and offers Dayeon a great part (she has been my no. 1 since Girls Planet 999 first episode ok, I have the right to be happy).
“running vroom vroom vroom like a supersonic”
With "MVSK", we’re getting a totally different vibe. More mature I’d say, and something I was kind of hoping to hear as I like this kind of electropop sound. The song features a funky bassline and it feels quite bright and elegant. The stop & go anti-drop with the vocal chops is great and their voices sound nice overall in the chorus. I find the song quite catchy and entertaining with loads of fun elements. I must say that the bridge is probably my fav part of the song, it really caught me off guard and I got the “WOW” moment, I truly love it. Here again, Dayeon’s vocals sound so nice
To be honest, it feels almost wrong to review the 3 other ones because of the context and everything but ok, expect something very not objective. I. DO. NOT. CARE. They also made some production changes so it still has a few new elements.
“Shine” is a mix of happiness, brightness, fun, and cuteness. And over that, it’s so catchy and is such a great energy booster.
As for “Another Dream” it’s the ballad that lets them showcase their vocals, and they’re great ok. I’d like to ask how do they sing with that much emotion, aren’t they teens? It’s a gorgeous song overall. And… ANOTHER DREEAAAMMMMM 너와 함께
It’s time for the Girls Planet 999 anthem, “O.O.O”. This is our song, this is the beginning of it all, this was the start of the trauma and obsession, and it’s a good song! People who didn’t suffer shouldn’t be allowed to listen to this one. It feels somewhat experimental and I've been dying for a k-pop song to take risks with uncommon sounds and technics. The energy delivered is great and I think all gp999 watchers have a special connection with the song, and the 3 last songs to be honest.
By keeping the 3 'Girls Planet' anthems you're sure to make the fans connected to the music no matter what, and with the 3 new songs you bring this novelty we definitely need and want. Once again, I'm very pleased with the final results and I do not regret getting very involved in the whole show.
