Welly - Big In The Suburbs

I write, and I write. I write songs, and I write about art. Today, I’m choosing to write on Instagram. As I write, I’m prompted to get assistance from AI and it makes me want to die.

I don’t really want to do lists anymore, at least not about music for the time being. Lately, film has felt like the only inspiring thing to write about anymore. For me, there’s just no mystery when I write about music. I understand and identify every mechanical and emotional component that ... read more

Mark Ronson - Suzanne

The tune and recording are super solid, but I don't know. It could just be me, but something feels very sinister and odd about Mark Ronson and RAYE very clearly pulling this blatant Amy revivalism. Like... I don't know. Paying homage is totally fine, this just just feels too on the nose. Are we crossing a line?

Kesha - YIPPEE-KI-YAY. (The Remixes)

Wow he really has to be one of the best to ever do it, because idk how you take one of the worst, most tedious tracks of this year and flip it on it's head, coat it in sugar, and bake it into dynamic bliss. πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

Anamanaguchi - Darcie
90

It’s a real great tune, sorta in the lyrical vein of Mykel and Carli / Eulogy For a Rock Band. Where it really falls flat though is that this really would’ve been better sung by Rivers πŸ˜…. Berkman’s kinda low, flat, and half-given delivery just doesn’t take it to the top floor in the way Cuomo’s boyish and empassioned vocals likely would. Regardless, this is still some great, and unashamed swagger jacking I can get behind if Weezer isn’t gonna get their act ... read more

The Femcels - He Needs Me

Pure bliss. Unadulterated expression, and an all-encompassing mission statement for what's to become a phenomenal duo. I was already pretty feral about this song the past couple weeks, but today we just got the music video..... needless to say I feel all-the-more reaffirmed in the potential Gabriella and Rowan are going to tap into!!! From their "Ban Sex NOW" wallets, to using a fork as a comb, kitschy styling, fast food props, dejected male-dorks, children's toys, and ... read more

Tony Velour - Star Play3r

2025 is my sixth active year listening to Tony Velour, despite not having any new releases since last Valentine's Day. Tony is a very special artist to me, and I know his art means heaps to many others out there as well (given how far his olive branch of influence has stretched across the underground) . Every release seems to act as a pivotal bookmark in my life, and his subtle evolutions across time have amounted to a legacy that will just keep growing. 'Star Play3r' is another ... read more

Lambrini Girls - Who Let the Dogs Out

Will 2025 be known as the year of the debut?

Last year was what I deemed "The Year of the Duet", having been riddled and gifted with so many blessed collaborations. With this being said, it's as if every acclaimed and established artist seemingly want to release last year, I find it difficult to name very many specific projects to look forward to in 2025. I mean we had Camera Obscura return eleven years later, nine since the loss of Carey Landers. The Softies reunited after ... read more

Mac Miller - 5 Dollar Pony Rides
NR

A part of me feels hollow having just realized it's been PRECISELY five years to the day since the delivery of 'Good News'. A whole half decade. I don't know, I feel like I just felt a piece of myself wither away upon that dawning on me. What can I do though? Not much, I guess fighting time isn't feasible. That aside, I really like this song and I am excited yet dreading the day the album drops on us next week. Will this be the last new release we see from his estate? ... read more

roro - Hot Hits

I'm THEE electroclash fiend! This just doesn't scratch the undying itch I have for the genre though. I mean, like the production is definitely there. TEYKO definitely did their thing, although maybe being one of the most uninspiring renditions I've heard in the past couple years. Vocally though, this gay lil 'roro' boy just does not have the sauce. Perhaps I'm just spoiled and still riding off the fumes emitted by the masterpiece 'Amour', which is a ... read more

SPELLLING - Portrait of My Heart

A great kickstart to 2025! After being left mildly disappointed by her last record, I've stayed vigilant for whatever SPELLLING's future had in store. This is rocking, yet tender. The guitars feel intimate, yet heavy. And the songwriting ?? Yes yes yes yes, give me more of this. That entire third verse / bridge was UGHHHH pure bliss.

Lil Baby - WHAM
NR

Not gonna lie, I only listened for the GloRilla and Travis tracks. Zoooo wee mama I'm sorry I'm such a sucker for Travis' voice, I have no clue what it is about it that is always so compelling to me !!! It's something about that gravelly, melodic timbre to it that always has me needing more. Scott absolutely delivers a sickening lil ear-worm of a hook, I just wish I didn't have to sit through Baby's verse πŸ˜….

Also what a missed opportunity to not have Glo ... read more

Jane Remover - JRJRJR

Ever since my first exposure to Jane, seeing her live in concert, her voice just makes me sick. It was terrible live, and somehow she’s embracing all the most putrid and ugly parts of the human voice. This is woman repellent. Really I can only sing praises to this track for one reason, it’s that she’s no longer running away from these very rap and electronic tinged influences that started her career off to begin with. Always thought it to be disgusting how she labeled the ... read more

Joaquin Phoenix - Joker: Folie à Deux (Music From The Motion Picture)

Honestly I'm just as surprised as you probably are. The film and soundtrack alike INSTANTLY hooked me within my first watch. Inside the first month of having seen the film, the soundtrack swiftly became my most listened-to record of all time. Creating a monumental tremor in my life, and re-centering my focus on love, Folie à Deux is the most influential media to ever shake me in recent years. It's sickeningly lovely, it's boisterous, it's so unabashed and ... read more

emory - double dog

‘tooth’ was a speeding bullet that caught me off guard, a bold and promising debut single that had me anticipating the next moves that emory would be take! It was a very colorful, and emotionally rich indie-pop rager that I placed pretty high in my top 200 songs of 2024 list despite it featuring one glaring flaw. A HORRENDOUSLY grating bridge that completely derails the song, hell-bent on boasting some of the most unpleasant sonics you could hear in a song this year. STILL THOUGH, I ... read more

The Voidz - Like All Before You

(WORK IN PROGRESS)

You either get it, or you don't.

Silly business aside, I fucking adore this direction. It may be WEIRD. It may be JARRING. I fully get why someone wouldn't resonate with the piss-poor leveled vocals across the record, or if all the zany inflections drowning in Auto-Tune make you want to roll your eyes. Maybe they just struggle to grasp a foothold on any semblance of a song structure. I haven't read any reviews yet, so these are only assumptions, but all these ... read more

Where’s the drama? This tape is a great example of how contemporary artists completely fail to match the bold, colorful , and soaring heights of 2010’s pop with this current revivalism moment going on. First off, LAY OFF THE AUTOTUNE. I have no clue why people remember that era being drenched in that much tune??? Excuse me, but I remember every pop smash then being CRYSTAL CLEAR. There’s a reason it’s one of the most polarizing sounds of pop music, because there was no ... read more

I wanted to say something about this record before the week was over, but gosh there’s something big just not clicking with me.

Sound-scapes? Textured, immersive, and innovative. Vocals? Yes yes yes, her voice has always been one of my favorites this is easily her most expressive outing yet. Grooves? We’re in funky town for a good deal of the record! Mica? Stunning and beautiful, True Blue is one of the most gorgeous character portrayals in music. Mica really sells it, the music ... read more

Laura Marling - No One’s Gonna Love You Like I Can

Personally, I like to seep and soak myself in the potent emotions that Laura Marling’s songwriting dishes out, so ideally this could’ve been longer. Liiike I’m a little sad we didn’t get another addition to Laura’s devastating catalogue of bridges BUT,,, I really see this being no issue once the album is out. This’ll be a great and sweet transitional moment when I’m constantly spinning the record, looping over and over, a pattern in repeat ( ;

On riley's review of The Strokes - Falling out of Love
"@Schmedess the tuning being done primarily inside Melodyne would make SO much sense why it has that character !!! love the insight hehehe. but yes fully agree, the autotune is absolutely not the issue, it's just an easy scapegoat for everyone i feel. the issue is kinda just his performances not standing toe-to-toe with the grit and angst in their previous work (even in The New Abnormal !!! the performances across that record feel devastatingly alive; as if he's bereft of hope). this would've been upper echelon if he just hammed it up and channeled his emotions more poignantly"
On riley's review of The Strokes - Falling out of Love
"ur the only one i trust to get it right with perceiving Julian’s current work, bc my only big holdup too was lack of structural and emotional variety throughout the track. liiiike maybe it was just me, but around 04 minutes in i thought i was hearing rumblings of one of those emotional breakthrough bridges we get out of them (something like in Voidz’ ‘All The Same’ that creates this huge emotional, melodic vacuum in the middle of the track). soo i feel a little let down by the bridge we got here. but i love his pen and how fragile and intimate this recording is overall !!! like the autotune is emotionally complimentary, and sounds kinda manually tuned much of the time?? like it bends almost unnaturally for many parts, but i love love love"

On Runwaycartier's review of Tyler, The Creator - DON'T TAP THE GLASS
"@Runwaycartier I'm a little sorry for the AI comment, especially since you seem to be on the right side of history by condemning it and it's consequences. I didn't think it was like written fully by AI, just that it seemed like you had one "touch" it up or something. like @sean_music said, you just realllyyy need to work on your syntax. a super dizzying read, and i think it's quite vain to consider yourself / this review as "real writing" when it clearly seems to have the same disorienting effect on other readers."

On Paleblooded's review of Mac Miller - Balloonerism
"@VIbesRUs Tasteful and posthumous aren't words I would pair in the same breath. You put your full unadulterated faith into people you do not know at all. It really doesn't matter who might know him best, that's all assumption. It's extremely unhealthy to avoid critical thought and always try to justify the actions of people who have nothing but person gain to achieve through these re-releases and new albums. And like i said, I reckon it'll still be a good album, but that moreso speaks to Mac's virtuosity as an artist."
On Paleblooded's review of Mac Miller - Balloonerism
"Artists are fully autonomous and should have the rights to govern and curate their art, and they lose that autonomy upon death. Unless there was documented proof of them talking about how they want their releases being handled after death (which there never is), I still feel incredibly uncomfortable with the precedent of posthumous works in general no matter the quality."
On Paleblooded's review of Mac Miller - Balloonerism
"Despite liking the single and looking forward to the record, I just want to let you know I'm with you. This all just reminds me of the SOPHIE album last year. People just ASSUME that the posthumous release "is not like the others" because of the people involved, that these are all selfless acts done in part by the family and collaborators. @VIbesRUs is a great example of someone being totally disillusioned and indebted to the choices being made. completely slipping into hyperboly "before he shelved it",,,,, like if he shelved it don't you reckon it's for a reason ? "it was already leaked so it makes sense", actually no that is just disprespectful as hell and reaffirming the actions made by leakers....."
