midwxst is from my hometown and even went to my middleschool. I remember interacting with him a couple times but never really got to know him since he was a different year. Fast forward a few years and I discovered his music through a deep dive into hyperpop. With smash hits like "Trying", "riddle" and "care" Edgar had a distinct sound, blending elements of hyperpop, hip hop, emo rap and trap.
On E3, midwxst loses the elements of his sound that made him so incredibly interesting to start with. It feels like I'm listening to something I've heard hundreds of times before. Don't get me wrong, the production here is nothing to scoff at. s.f.b. has an groovy feel-good melodic beat that just get's underutilized by some poorly mixed hi-hats and some bad song writing. warning, my favorite song on this record, actually shows some hyperpop elements with some bassy undertones and vocal breakdowns that feel fresh and vibrant. I guess walking away from this record I just feel disappointed that it doesn't feel like midwxst really shows any individuality on this record.
I REALLY wanted to enjoy this. Trust me, midwxst had every bias from me going for him in this review, but to put it simply, I didn't enjoy this album as much as I wanted to. I believe in Edgar. I think the shortcomings here will push him further.
