a lot of bright and interesting textures serve as ear candy on Avalon, but I can't help but feel like its unrefined.
If I had a nickel for every trans artist that made good Hyperpop music I'd have three nickels
Dekos' Achilles heel has always been that his projects can be all over the place at times, but eclipse not only feel more focused but showcases Dekos production at its best.
Deko still struggles with writing lyrics but it at least sounds to me like he's developed his flow a bit more compared to previous projects. The mixing could be better on tracks like "im not sleeping now" but the rage infused drums are insane enough that I'm willing to look past it just a bit. ... read more
I found this record from a few Daft Punk samples and later discovered it in the back of a the Sundog Books record store in Seaside Florida. I can't lie I think I've spun this now 45 year old vinyl at least 50 times. It's so relaxing and so soothing. My father calls it elevator music and while I do agree that's where you might find it dear god put me in the elevator where this is playing and swipe ALL of the buttons.
Full of washed up sounds and fine rapping. Just really underwhelming for me. If this entire album had the sound of POP OUT it would actually be interesting.
When I close my eyes, I find myself in the center of a grand music hall, with Hendrix standing center stage in bright bohemian attire. He strikes his guitar, and like a wizard’s staff, it unleashes a violent beam of what can only be pure musical energy. Legions of accompaniment rain down in no particular direction yet remain perfectly synchronized, bent to the will of a madman.
But amidst this chaotic brilliance, the hardest part to imagine isn’t the sound or the ... read more
I've never gone through an album where almost every song I'm thinking to myself "Ooo this sounds interesting" and five seconds later that turns to "Oh they fucked it up"
Edit: I didn't even realize Julian Casablancas was in this band, why the fuck do they have so many vocal effects on his already stunning voice. It ruins it for me.
Get this guy some singing lessons and he might make AOTY
Lil Yachty's career revival genuinely needs to be studied. From a SoundCloud success to a dying trend only to do a complete 180 and drop a genuinely fantastic psych rock album and collab with James fucking Blake. The biggest aspect in all of this is that despite completely reinventing his sound, Yachty never reinvented himself. With some great beats accompanying the ethereal production from James Blake and Yachty's very distinct vibrato this doesn't feel like Yachty pretending to ... read more
I like this a lot but really wish he would mix the drums lower and let the vocals and synths really shine. That's what defines his style and he's been losing it for the past year or two. I want him to build off the success of records like "Trying" with those loud unapologetic synths and 808s but it feels like he just wants to shift to more trendy hip hop sounds.
Good things come to those who wait, but man did he make us wait. Coming more than 6 years after his highly acclaimed debut, Sampha somehow manages to blow away expectations that were already incredibly high.
Lahai is a beautiful album from front to back. With instrumentation that makes you feel like you're floating and no shortage of passionate soulful lyrics, this record is one of the most complete works of music I've heard in awhile.
Sampha at his very best - simply phenomenal.
