yall i cant fucking believe this, huh??? why arent yall freaking out, is this not the greatest thing in the world???
like sincerely overwhelming! who is this guy?? whats thd source on this being a private press by his mom?
now, im no dub expert, i don't know if this is a drop in the bucket... but the texture, the arhythmic synth percussions, the sub-ripping basslines, the whimsy, the fantasy, the holy spirit, the swirling trance of an uninterupted hour of warm, fuzzy, DIY psychedelia! ... read more
this record has been infuriating and puzzling me for the past two weeks. cameron winter is the name of a man I do not know & a name associated with a public figure who gets under my skin in a very specific way. cameron winter is a 23-year-old white wealthy new york cis guy and it’s painfully apparent in many of his public & artistic choices. his music videos, his marketing, and what i saw of his instagram livestreams are insufferable. interview quotes like “i’m young ... read more
what does comfortable art mean? what is the strength of art which is so deeply steeped in conventions and traditions? i think any decently-versed rock enthusiast is going to hear in First Day Back the vocal mania of Tim Kinsella, the basslines of On the Might of Princes, the drive of Mineral, and the twinkle of American Football. these are not cutting edge sounds by any means, they are sounds deeply steeped in 90s suburban American teenage angst.
First Day Back is not a trail-blazing band, ... read more
i am a massive Residents fan, my name is eddweena partially in reference to the opening track of Not Available.
with The Residents coming to Chicago, I flipped my lid with excitement! I didn't think I'd ever have the chance! But when I saw they'd be playing this.... I had a horrible sinking feeling.
Why are we still entertaining this moral blemish in their catalog with such open arms? The chanting? "The Walrus Hunt"? Hello? This album is extremely and unavoidably ... read more

the catastrophe of our modern nose-picking musical era is how overlooked this record is. an astoundingly consistent package which leans further into Black's off-kilter song structures and returns to the maniacal distortion-laden bombast of surfer rosa. i love Kim as much as the next alt rock trans egg who needed a female role model, and certainly there's a nakedness to the band without (as much of) her lush backing vocals, however this album is no husk! it's ... read more

surfer rosa, at a very critical moment in my adolescence, convinced me that being weird is REALLY cool. nothing about me has been the same since i heard that man scream in spanish and that chick sing about a penis. a decade defining sound. a personality defining record. lyrical lunacy, sass, and attitude. boobs. grating guitars and fast rhythms which refined that numbskull pigfuck sound into indie rock of the future. pop music for cavemen with spike clubs. a factory of ... read more

love "holiday song"! don't love negative stereotypes of women. best enjoyed as bonus tracks to surfer rosa.

expected little, surprised by consistency and creative textural moments throughout! does anything on here stack up to the passion of the title track? does anything in the band's whole discography stack up to "for some reason i can't explain, i know st. peter will call my name"?

i was honestly floored at the consistency revisiting this! "HARDLY EVER SMILE" is a club classic, that goes without saying, but this record never kept my interest. no idea what i was on with that thought!!! this album is driven by those rich hip hop grooves that defined it's era, but the sheer amount of textural and melodic ideas that are peppered throughout are extraordinary! and sekiguchi's voice??? get OUT!!! excited to keep revisiting this and ... read more

a billowing, transcendental triumph!!! the horns of the angels sound like the production tags of your loved ones. the swell of everything, accumulating to the grandeur of "Sariri Tunupa"... there's nothing like it! at least not that i've heard. anything i HAVE heard was a rock album from 20 years ago, and now here's Los Thutanaka speaking the very same spiritual, expansive, conceptual, ambitious, minimalist language in a tongue that's both ... read more
