There are experimental bands, and then there is Deerhoof.
As Deerhoof albums go this one is advanced listening.
As always, defying every expectation of what music should be
peppered with the most perfectly astounding moments of
ripping rock-n-roll to remind you that it's not just random,
they know exactly what they are doing, and they're ace musicians.
"Rainbow Silhouette of the Milky Rain" is a joyful 10/10
I don't like to call myself a fan of any band, but there are a few who's
fearless experimentation and flouting of musical conventions do earn a special
affection and respect from me. Deerhoof is one of those bands.
On my initial skim of this album I wasn't too "Jazzed" (pun intended) at the
film score quality and traditional jazz elements. I don't dislike jazz, it's just not
a genre I actively listen at this point of my life.

I made it through 8 minutes of the first track. If you are going to open an album with a 12 minute track you better WOW me, because if I ain't feeling it, I'm no giving you a second track at 25 minutes to change my mind. The nearly 4 minutes of utterly unremarkable instrumental leading up to vocal howls and croons and insincere growling of phrases in refrain made the experience feel like a sorry attempt to sound like Jim Morrison and The Doors.

It's got it's sticky moments but for the most part, to my ears, an overproduced string of dance songs (if there such a thing as overproduced dance songs) about one girls struggles of finding her identity in a self-obsessed world. Upbeat musically, but dark thematically
Listening to any track off this album is between a 7 and a high 8, but it's hurt by it's unoriginality and lack of diversity. It's a difficult album to listen to in one sitting because by the third track I felt as if I'd been listening to the same song for 15 minutes, by the 7th song it was torture--not because the songs are particularly bad, they were faithful and well executed replications of the 70s romantic soul genre but lacked any deviation or re-interpretation of ... read more
