Drawn in by many positive reviews, I was very curious about the album. However, listening to it turned out to be quite a challenging experience for me. I knew that, as the solo debut of the former bassist of black midi, I probably shouldn’t expect easy listening. Still, compared to Black Midi, the chaos here felt almost unlistenable to me. To me, the album felt a bit too ambitious, and the wild ride often ends up nowhere without really coming together as a whole
I have to admit that at first I was a bit unsure and the spark didn’t come right away. But at some point it happened – it just clicked, and I got caught up in the hype. This is dance pop on a whole new level. The sound and beats are a perfect combination and work especially well across the full album. There are also catchy melodies, emotional lyrics, and overall a surprising freshness. Simply very well done.
With her album Collapsed in Sunbeams, she won my heart. Unfortunately, she has not reached that same level again. With this album, she also does not manage to bring back the same magic as her debut. It is not bad, but at times it drifts along and becomes a bit boring. I think the beat-driven sound does not suit her very well. Her rather soft voice gets lost in the bass, sound effects, and broken beats. Sometimes it is engaging, but most of the time it feels dull.
I started the album with high expectations, but I was very disappointed. The beginning is strong, but towards the end it clearly gets weaker. The lyrics did not fully connect with me. I had a similar feeling about the music. In the end, I was just glad when it was over.
Jessie Ware is the disco queen of our time. For three albums now, she has drawn me into her post-disco world — and she hasn’t let me go. You could say that some things repeat themselves by now. But everything is so well arranged, produced, and performed that it doesn’t really matter. A lot is done right here. The retro sound is soft and floating, while the beats are strong and make you want to dance. The melodies are beautiful, and Jessie’s voice is like a dream. Is it ... read more
