I wasn’t even thinking this EP was interesting enough to write a review about, but then “Champion” came around. This song feels like it was written back in the early 2010s back when recession pop and Mumford and Sons were dominating the charts. The problem I have with this song is how it encapsulates everything I dislike in pop music. I personally can’t stand the overly positive messages that feel forced and the stop clap beat in the background during the chorus. ... read more
“Bubblebath” is a mixed bag of an EP. “Lowlife” is one of my favorite songs from Poppy with its reggae influences and solid vocal delivery. Outside of that “Money” and “Altar” are fine songs but I don’t think they showcase much personality. I wish on “Altar” that they would have used the tropical sounding instrumental that was in the bridge throughout the whole song. “American Kids” is by far my least favorite song on ... read more
Gracie Abrams is an interesting case. She’s generally regarded as a nepo baby and this EP shows exactly what those people are talking about. I defend some of her recent work but this showed Gracie was out of her league. Gracie is working with producers like Benny Blanco, Joel Little, and Blake Slatkin. All of these are some of the top producers in modern pop and she immediately gets in the studio with them her first EP. Generally I wouldn’t care if Gracie showcased something that ... read more
I can definitely hear the start of a legendary musician on this album. It’s not the most interesting thing I’ve heard but the vibes are solid. The thing that lowers my rating is how no song stands out in particularly any way. It’s a bunch of very good songs that all fail to step into the great category. It does make me want to listen to his other work as his voice is great so it did its job.
This is a tricky album to rate. It is a cover album with a bunch of old punk bands. Many on here inspired Nirvana in some way so it’s cool to see them return the favor with this. However, I’m not quite sure if I would call it a great cover album. It’s raw and sloppy which describes Bleach perfectly but doesn’t capture the magic Nevermind had. Dee Dee Ramone sounds high on “Negative Creep” so I’m not sure whether to add or take away points for that. I ... read more
Forrest Frank made one of the most unlistenable albums of the year. Apparently he’s got 8.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify too. I don’t think there was a single thing I liked on this album.
I went into it trying to ignore the religious content of the lyrics. However, Frank made it impossible to do so with his poorly placed slang. “NO L’s” is the most obvious example as the whole song sees him talk about how he takes no l’s anymore since he found him. ... read more
Idols by Yungblud is a chaotic mess that does a disservice to Britpop. You can tell he knows the genre but at the same time he makes choices which are in very poor taste. The beginning of the album sounds terrible while the end just bores me.
Yungblud’s lack of vocal ability is the biggest issue. His performance reminded me a lot of MGK’s attempt at pop punk. An outsider attempting to recreate the sound of a genre while not following any guidelines. I think Yungblud thought the ... read more
Easily the best Christmas project I’ve heard. “A Nonsense Christmas” is very fun and “is it new years yet?” is the most relatable Christmas song for me. Some songs miss for me but it wasn’t torturous like some other Christmas music is.
For this coming out only a year after “Short n’ Sweet”, it sounds completely different in a good way. My favorite part of this album I’m shocked to say was Jack Antonoff’s production. I really liked what he did with “Tears” in specific. It’s a catchy, fun dance track with a great beat behind it. I hope Sabrina explores the sound more since it’s my favorite song she’s made. I also liked the percussion a lot on “Never Getting ... read more
In comparison to TTPD this is a big upgrade. The album doesn’t completely feel like a soulless cash grab like the previous one did. The change from Jack to Max on production did wonders too because Max didn’t just phone it in the entire album like Jack would have.
The biggest issue I have is with “Actually Romantic”. The lyricism about Charli is fairly weak but there’s a bigger issue. They blatantly ripped off The Pixies “Where Is My Mind?” without ... read more
Taylor just didn’t try on this at all. Jack’s production sucked since he did the same thing the whole album. The lyrics saw Taylor have so much edgy swearing she could be in an emo band. There’s probably a lot more I missed but the album was unlistenable in the second half because of how boring it was.
The lyrics somehow are worse than the other Taylor albums I’ve heard. It only took her until the second song to hit us with a completely dumb line with “Who uses ... read more
I’m not in Taylor’s targeted demographic but I think this album sucks. She plays it far too safe and doesn’t try anything new on half these songs. It’s just the same bland production, bland vocals, and repetitive lyrics about men. The worst part is whenever they do actually try something, they always have something else on the song drag it down.
I want to touch on the production choices first. “End Game” could have been good. A Future feature was actually ... read more
The only thing you need to know about this is that you’ll have a headache by the second track.
This is just a fun pop record. Nothing too deep about it but there’s a lot of great pop songs on this.
Gorillaz release a very strong debut EP. Damon was able to showcase what the band would become very nicely with “Tomorrow Comes Today” and “Rock the House”. Both songs are great with the harmonica in the first track and the recorder in the second. “12D3” I feel is an unnecessary inclusion on this. It would work well as an album closer but this is a four track EP that showcases what the band is so I don’t think it does much for the project.
3O3 tried something with this album. I’m not sure how to describe it other than it is an atrociously bad listen. They managed to get one song somewhat right and the rest was the worst of the band.
“MY DICK” is actually somewhat humorous. Maybe it’s just in comparison to the rest of the album but at least it doesn’t take itself seriously like the rest of these songs. The worst is probably “MAD AT YOU” which has a horrendous beat drop. At no point do ... read more
With me having given Lorde’s three previous albums all 100 it’s no shock this one also comes in at that score. I feel that she just captures the best elements of pop music. Her music doesn’t become complacent with each new release. This album clearly had time put into it with the deep emotional notes and experimentation with the production choices.
Coming off the poor reception of Solar Power, Lorde goes back to the sound of Melodrama but evolved. The album feels like a ... read more
This album is so fun. So many classics which have all stood the test of time. Their energy just has a way of infecting you.
