You have to give Tim Christensen his flowers. He is a great musician and writes some really good melodies. It's just a shame that, to me the sound is just 80's hard rock, but with better riffs, and that is just not a style of music I vibe with at all. Credit where credit is due, the first half of this album has some absolutely killer tunes, and are among the best songs written in this style imo, but overall it's just not for me. The album also suffers from being front loaded ... read more
Perfect example of how Kim Larsen, when he cared enough to try, was able to write some of the best songs ever written in Danish. Unfortunately this album also has some of his usual stinkers and annoying gimmicky songs.
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENNNNSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
A great Live effort by one oof Denmark's biggest acts, in which his normally mediocre songs are carried hard by an amazing backing band. This works extremely well un the more energetic songs, where the band has a lot more room to play, but that still leaves a good half of the track list feeling like it drags a bit. The track list also does have it share of stinkers that don't get improved ... read more
Double mini-review!!
So the artists link for this album redirects to a Portuguese band, which is odd because the cover showed here is from a 1998 Swedish album, and the latter is the album that I have based my rating on.
I listened to the Portuguese album with zero knowledge of what I was going into. I was greeted by a groovy and experimental, mostly instrumental dance rock record, sounding like a mix of Animal Collective and African/Brazilian/Cape Verdean traditional music (I am ... read more
I have Bohemian PTSD. I went to boarding school in a year were we sang Bohemian Rhapsody in the school choir, everybody played it on piano and my friends were massive Queen fans and played them constantly. The year was 2018. Then the movie came out. The whole school proceeded to play nothing but Queen for over a month. Bohemian Rhapsody is a 10/10 song. A marvelous achievement in the art of songwriting. I love it, have amazing memories attached to it, and unless i am with my friends from ... read more
At it's peak, this has some of the bands best material. But the problem is that it's way to inconsistent in tone to be enjoyable if you listen to the tracks in order. It's nice to see that they can take themselves less seriously on certain tracks, something i think their earlier works lacked. I like the darker more trip-hop adjacent songs, as well as "At The Risk Of Feeling Dumb", but a lot of the other songs just went in one ear out the other for me. I'll relisten in due time. It ... read more
This might be my favorite album by them. If Nonagon is an unstoppable train constantly moving forward, and Rat's nest is pure thrash with hardcore punk energy, then this album combines those two, throws in elements of Indigenous Australian, middle eastern and African music, and stirs it together with prog, for an album that sounds like a 50 minute boss fight in a video game lava-level. Absolute insanity.
Favorites: Witchcraft, Flamethrower, Motor Spirit, Dragon
This is probably one the albums i wanted to like the most but didn't. I had heard nothing but great thigs about this project before listening, so i had high expectations. So let me just preface this and say that the production, the musical styles incorporated on the album and how everything generally sounds are all things i really like about this album. The guitars especially sound incredible, and i am huge fan of this style of guitar being played over these lo-fi 90's hip-hop style drums, ... read more
The songs that were re-recorded for Frengers sound like demos. The sound of the album overall is quite weak; the guitars lack distortion, the drums are way too loud, Jonas' vocals are way too quiet, and the lack of effects and instrumentation in certain areas makes the songs sound a lot less impactful than on Frengers which does those things perfectly. The songs that got cut from Frengers are more or less just duds. Mica has an obnoxious synth-lead that gets old the instant you click play, ... read more
This album would be an easy 100 for me if it didn't have Optimistic on it. Why is that song here? It's just an ok alt-rock track without any of the ambient/electronic elements. Only the outro incorporates these elements as the song transitions nicely into In Limbo, and the outro is great, but main part of the song should have been something else entirely. IMO, Optimistic completely kills the flow and cohesion of the album, and could've easily been swapped for one of the electronic tracks or ... read more
After nine years of waiting, Stromae drops a new LP and it's... not as exciting as it could've been. His last record before this, "racine carrée", was in my opinion one of the best records of the decade, with loads of anthemic synthpop hooks and gripping vocal performances.
Now with a nine year break it was almost inevitable that we would see some sort of change in Stromae's sound. The lead single "Santé" continued the synthpop sound that we know and love, ... read more
