Whom Gods Destroy is mostly an old gift in new wrapping. There are some interesting elements here, they seem to be trying to blend djent with old school prog metal. It sort of works, but more often than not the two styles are divided, rather than fused together. This album is all over the place, as many super group prog albums tend to be. Still, I think I have a soft spot for albums like this and the highlights (i.e. The Decision, Crawl, Keeper of the Gate) are bangers. Crucifier, a good ... read more
Slightly boring listen. Kinda generic. Seems like this artist would be right at home as an opener for Disturbed/Staind/any other butt rock band. Are the instrumentals computer generated?
Yeah, a meh kind of album.
Damn...a punch to the face and a shot of jim beam to take away the sting. Sick album.
88 -----> 72 after repeat. This really starts off strong with Perpetual Terminal absolutely face-meltingly awesome. I think that biased my first listen though, the album really kinda struggles after that until the final two songs, which rip again. A Prayer to the Holy Death and the Nihilist Undone are other early highlights. After that the album starts to fall for me a bit. Only real miss for me is ... read more
I like it. A little mix of the Darkness, Royal Blood, Struts, and a ton of disco vibes with some funk mixed in. Favorite tracks are Gloomtown Brats, What Love?, Sixft. Falls off a bit toward the end of the album (after track 8), with the exception of Idiots of Oz, which is awesome. All in all a pretty great album.
Not bad for a mannequin from Spirit Halloween. Seriously though, amazed Mick Mars can do anything, and not sure how much input he had vs. what seems like a stout team of sound engineers and producers. It's a decent output, sounds right at home in the early 2000s back when Sixx AM, Disturbed, etc... were making mid-tempo rock albums like this. It's a bit tired in 2024. But hell, the dude is 72 years old and can't move. L.A. Noir is a standout track. I really wish Mick would've leaned more into ... read more
Great background music for working/studying. It's like an artist's study piece, unfinished in places, too detailed in others, not entirely cohesive (despite what Consequence of Sound says). But as background music, it is quite good...just enough texture to keep the motivational flow but without distracting vocals etc...
I like Zara's effervescent vocal style, and some of these songs are absolute bangers. The filler tracks really mess up the flow of this album though, so probably best just to add the good songs to a playlist and move on. I wish Zara could get some more consistent producers. A cohesive album from her would be a treat.
The name recognition is pulling the weight on this album. No way this is more than middle of the road except for the sole reason that people are starved for a radiohead album and using this as a coping mechanism. Really just a snoozer with some interesting jazzy tidbits here and there.
This is such a leap forward for Glass Beach. Holy hell, what an awesome album. I need time to digest, but my rating will likely only go even higher upon repeated listens. Only real negative is the length, which harkens back to the late 90s when everyone was jamming in CDs at 70 minutes or more. Other than the marathon listen time, this album is stellar.
Album highlights: the whole thing is an odyssey and should probably be consumed as a whole. For individual songs, slip under the door is one ... read more
Good return to form for Green Day, albeit a bit safe. I wasn't a big fan of the lead single and album opener, The American Dream is Killing Me. Sounds like a B-side track cut from American Idiot for being too weak. The album picks up though with Look Ma, No Brains. Bobby Sox sounds like a sample of Beast of Burden at the beginning and is kinda generic, but not offensive. One Eyed Bastard is better, Dilemma is a highlight, might be the best track on the album. Gravelly vocals and some bite to ... read more
21 Savage definitely writes lyrics with one of those big thick crayons so he doesn't have as much space to fill.
Detox is a decent release that is right in line with later era (hed) p.e. albums. Jahred has developed an intense gravelly texture to his vocals that spills into the clean vocals. It's not a bad thing, it's just different than older albums. The lyrics are a liability as they often are on (hed) p.e. albums. There are some really deep, hard hitting verses, followed by asinine playground insults. This has always been a weakness of (hed) p.e., which is maddening because this band is great in so ... read more
Songs bump, but lyrics are generic and vocals largely a liability. New Britney?
I love genre mashups...but this album doesn't fully connect the pieces. While I like the sound of each piece individually, together the sum is not greater than the parts. This comes off as a study piece, meant to experiment and see what works and what doesn't. To that end, this is a great album to spin a few times, however it just doesn't stand out as a whole.
Listen to as a sonic palate cleanser, then go find an AOTY.
