Weezer's fourteenth album "OK Human" is a surprising left turn into more orchestral and dramatized music. Without a single electric guitar track on this record, they trade out most of the gimmicky nature of their music for a more refined and classic sound. This works out in their favor pretty well, songs like "Dead Roses" and "Mirror Image" would be so painful if the orchestra wasn't there to add much-needed color. Rivers' lyrics are still awful, and while I ... read more
Now I must preface that I am a fan of Cheekface. The simple instrumentals with the middle-to-lower-class, relatable, anti-capitalist lyrical content is a perfect pairing, just dumb enough to work perfectly. Cheekface's second album "Emphatically No." is a distilling of everything they stand for, but with remarkably better sound quality than their first album. Instead of naming songs that I liked, I shall instead quote some lyrics. "Keep the rеceipts if you want to return life's ... read more
Kevin Parker's "The Slow Rush" had HUGE shoes to fill after releasing "Currents" in 2015. A lot of people were disappointed that this album didn't live up that one, but I had the advantage of this being my first Tame Impala listen, so I could review this essentially in a vacuum. And to that I say, this record is very, very good. "Lost in Yesterday" and "Breathe Deeper" still haven't left my playlists, and months later I still gravitate towards some of ... read more
Fat Night's album "Live for Each Other" is a laid-back collection of groovy neo-soul tunes. Their jazz and yacht rock inspired music soothes every fiber of my being. Songs like "Love Me" and "Sweet Nothings" are subdued yet capturing, while "Special" and "Question" are wild displays of the outer limits of this band's complex sound. While I do believe this album could've been shorter than its hour runtime, there are so many strokes of genius ... read more
The first of many 2020 albums I am backlogging before the end of the year. The 1975's album "Notes on a Conditional Form" is in a flurry rush to vomit up as many ideas as it possibly can, before its hour and twenty minute runtime is up. From the scream-o rock of "People" to orchestral pieces "The End (Music for Cars)" to country "Roadkill" to textural electronic tracks "Shiny Collarbone", this project is one shift in genres after another. And it ... read more
