莫文蔚 [Karen Mok] - 一朵金花 [Golden Flower]
80

Some really great tracks bogged down by a bunch of boring fillers. There are some nice atmospheric moments, like the spoken poetry over the fading-in techno beat (Childhood Apocalypse), and the cold breakbeats over the ambient sound of a lonesome urban corner (Princess of Mong Kok). It also gets pretty wild when it comes to a nonstop orgy of tribalized industrial rock (Top Hat).

Memphis rap going this local in China is always not a bad thing.

郭顶 (Guo Ding) - 飞行器的执行周期 (The Silent Star Stone)
38

Guo Ding's 2016 breakthrough album, The Silent Star Stone, is all formalistic conceptualism and no real substance.

It’s so wrapped up in its own pretentious sci-fi concept that it completely fails to be enjoyable, compelling music. All the raw, lo-fi production is just a pretentious cover for how surface-level his takes are on basic genres like funk, reggae, and psychedelia.

That this undercooked mess is called an instant modern classic says everything.

崔健 [Cui Jian] - 红旗下的蛋 (Balls Under the Red Flag)
92

An absolute classic.

One of the most ambitious rock albums in the Chinese rock scene, and a perfect example of how traditional Chinese instruments fuse with well-crafted elements such as jazz, rap, and funk — which hadn't yet become mainstream in mainland China back then.

The lyrics themselves are also politically straightforward, capturing the helplessness of turbulent, dark times marked by widespread disillusionment.

Bruno Mars - The Romantic
55

The fake romantic, the real mercenary.

Bland. Formulaic. Being even less catchy than previous works when you take obvious inspirations from latin music? My ass.

Joji - Piss In The Wind
51

Not as half-baked as the Smithereens, but it still just feels like a random bunch of singles packed together. Joji tried to step out of his comfort zone but ended up with some mid efforts, especially that cringey, generic shoegaze slop LOVE YOU LESS, which is actually unlistenable. Most of these one-minute tracks serve as unnoticable wallpaper music, with some short but kinda repetitive lyrics.

So y'all call this half-baked bunch of songs and demos an album?

Tame Impala - Deadbeat
52

Wow, after five years of waiting, Tame Impala's new album, Deadbeat, is rubbish.

So generic, so forgettable. And c'mon guys, Dracula is not even fucking good. If you love nu-disco there's a bunch of albums recent years miles better, and Loser as the only psych rock vibe track is definitely a step downwards compared to any track from Lonerism. As of all those house attempts, I'd say they overall prove that years of experience as producer really ruined his awareness of how to ... read more
