dude what this actually just sucks
my introduction to mgmt (in an album format), and what an introduction that is. the dynamic and at times icy production helps a lot of this album to feel like it lives (or rather, finds life) in negative space and build upon emotional void at the core of this album. great tracklist by the way; it really feels like the album reveals itself as it moves along. idk how to structure a proper review for this but it's really really really good and i like it a lot.
messy but proof that caroline polachek is one of the best doing it right now
really strong melodic evocations of an era long gone but made modern and novel by the lyrical fluency of abigail morris and the emphasis on the liquefaction of gender and sexuality to create an incredibly idiosyncratic, cohesive, and fun record. perhaps a bit musical theatre and a bit performative (although that is part of the charm), but otherwise, basically no notes.
fake is easily the best here and is honestly really really great. not enough electronic pop music reflects on its own emphasis on surfaces and artificiality and it also helps that its the shortest and punchiest material on here. disappointingly pleasant. this would probably hit in a club but i am not in a club.
