Shabazz Palaces - Black Up

if there ever was a 2010s rap album that has the ability to suck your shit completely dry down to the bone it'd probably be 'N*ggas on the Moon' by the grips, but if there ever was the second best at doing so (in a similar manner) i'd give it to Shabazz Palaces with their 2011 experimental effort 'Black Up'.

while i don't like to be that type of dude that slaps on the 'experimental' label at every album that has a beat switch, i can't deny that ... read more

i appreciated this album much more once i imagined geordie greep in a big ass suit

don't get me wrong— i love mr. greeps vocals, hell, 'the new sound' is like one of my favorite albums from last year, but listening to it here is obviously jarring for me. "well no wonder they disbanded, geordie's much better on his own!" he said, but halfway through the album, specifically on 'of schlagenheim', he made a connection and his life will NEVER be the ... read more

nothing hits better than well-written pop songs. this is that type of music that makes you giggle to yourself alone at night; it's cheerfully produced while being catchy and sweet you might even catch diabetes! wow that is not something to giggle about, man. what the fuck

favorite tracks;
-ひろがるなみだ, so warm.....
-最終列車は25時, sonically fun with its flow and it just doesn't let go!!
-恋は月の蔭に, simple in its production but its intimacy melts you

this was a beautiful listen, the way everything's recorded and mixed makes it sound so grand yet so far from our own grasp of it, accompanied by its blazing guitar that could probably be heard from miles away from the show; still echoing in our ears years later; still immortalized.

never thought a noise rock album would get me teary-eyed, weird.

rest in peace.

favorite tracks;
-天界のペルソナ~世に残す歌, what!?!?!?
-6gの星, the bleak is thick

spooky jazz my beloved~

have you ever been beaten repeatedly with a lead pipe and liked it? no? well looks like you gotta wait a little cause i'm here for my second round, baby!! this record is just non-stop ass kicking with its stellar and straight up godless performances from all the members involved (can't forget the screaming guy too,) and it makes you hold on to your socks crawled up to a corner like a baby with its haunting atmosphere that's never before heard in the free ... read more

seriously though, who needs drugs?

ugh, the way it just shifts from moody to energetic back and forth and back and forth without feeling jarring is nothing short of hypnotic; it forces you to imagine half-lit cities to swaying grass in plains you've never been to before in such a pleasing way. lsd can never..

i'm telling you man, it's definitely the synths in the background doing all that aurora borealis shit when i close my eyes, paired with the acoustic instruments such as ... read more

how soulless..

it sounds like it was recorded in a dark and desolate club in front of a crowd that doesn't care anymore, serving as mere background music for busier people, so grim and dull they don't even notice it during their date that's going nowhere far. this is authentic post-punk; a husk of what was once a raging movement in music now reduced only to dregs, bones!! might i add, scary! creating an atmosphere so bleak it might feel like you're gonna get stabbed with a ... read more

didn't seem to find the album anywhere on streaming, so i did some extensive research and digging (asking a nice rym user) for this. now i would've felt obligated to rate it highly to satisfy my means of adventure, but this isn't the case at all!! damn proud of myself!!

these are really solid and fun japanese indie pop songs with sprinkles of art rock here and there, that's lost from the cables apart from the hit single 'REAL MAN' and a couple others that hint of ... read more

a good ole' jazz jawn, and dare i say it's jazzier than some.

if you're looking for a simple yet effective jazz record, then hear no further, it's moanin' in your ear right now! excellent performances track-to-track from all of the musicians involved in the making of this album. on the surface, Moanin' is just your standard jazz album, no more different than any Sonny Rollins' effort or, hell, the legendary Thelonious Monk, but there's just something ... read more

this is my first time dabbling in the indonesian hip hop scene, and i have to say; holy shit this album is WAY better than i originally expected.

through somewhat corny lyrics and awkward vocal performances, kareem manages to show soul with his melancholic yet relatable lyrics over some disGUStingly clean production; making this album feel more human than most, an important factor when it comes to art in general. (n when it comes to my ratings ^^)

in tracks like 'hokben' and ... read more
