ok so the problem with this album is that i had it in my library since its release in 2018, and mind you i always listen on shuffle, but it never stood up to me besides a couple of times i wanted to listen “Girlfriend” separately.
i was definitely enamoured by queer themes in Christine’s art during my formative years, but looking back, this album is just HAIM sisters in a big trenchcoat, singing generic synthpop that’s suitable for H&M but fails to find its purpose ... read more
would be a solid 100 with such an iconic instrumental if it wasn’t for the voice. it’s okay my little guy i understand having dreams of singing but sometimes you should just let it go and only make beats
indeed falls just a bit bland -- at least on her first record Rose fails to establish herself as a distinctive artist. however, i would defend her against BRAT allegations -- the green album definitely made a cultural shift, but, like, that's just a new trend for now that wasn't even started by Charli. nobody called every-damn-one who did tropical house in 2017 a KYGO copycat. if we're here to compare, i would say "a bit more gen z Tove Lo" with bits of Kylie and Allie ... read more
to anyone saying this is boring. i memorised this album on my second listen when i was 12 and all my ADHD-pilled music taste was edm-heavy or bubblegum pop like ARTPOP and Teenage Dream and also vocaloid. if that’s boring for you than how do you listen to most of other music in the world.
EUSEXUA is, undoubtedly, one of her GP-friendlier albums to date. with quite generic CAPRISONGS, i was afraid Twigs lost her signature. this time, it’s still a deviation from her soundscape defined by her first unnamed records, but this time it’s definitely Twigs, despite this record being full of very obvious adopted features.
there aren’t any tracks i don’t like, but surprisingly, Striptease is far from my top tracks. i think its appeal to fans is rooted in it’s ... read more
this made me realise how much i’d like to dance to this in Ibiza with some normies.
(i don’t really like BM’s voice tho)
a context that got lost in time: i really appreciated Charli going in unexpected direction and not doing hyperpop/PC music in 2022, because she did capture the moment those things kinda died right before it became obvious to many others. with the sudden influx of 100gecs copycats and tiktok hyperpop, 2022 was the year it was all going to blow up and deflate, and it kinda did, as in 2023 we clearly moved past that genre that became gentrified. i mean, she probably realised continuing this ... read more
i really love Joost for his personality, but generally i don't care for his earlier albums at all :( and this body of work is the first to change that completely. on "Fryslân" Joost departures from his previous style that i would call a somewhat of youtuber music/fun rap type of music. he virtuously switches for rather original and authentic genre-bending adventure: connecting pieces from D&B, post-punk, happy hardcore, country, electro and techno and even 90's ... read more
deeply sorry but i never got Dorian Electra, despite being into hyperpop for almost 10 years and loving almost every artist listed similar to them.
production is disastrous, musical/lyrical content ranges from uninteresting to cringe and vocals are SERIOUSLY grating, they give me chills every time i listen to this album. it sounds like Dorian is extremely uncomfortable pushing out the vocal range they use, and it gives me physical discomfort
for the longest time i pretended to like Dorian, ... read more
intelligent people will get it........... others............ not so much me thinks
this album heavily targets everyone who's nostalgic for a decade-old era of retro-adjacent arts&crafts pop. Imaginal Disk is successful because we've been conditioned to fall out of love with 2010's Grimes' work due to her going insane on social media, but still crave the similar sound. this album is so late to the party it's almost a throwback record.
busy production and baby vocals aren't helping. most effort in crafting a great melody is overshadowed by ... read more
