Justin Bieber - Baby
70

There are a lot of genuine flaws with this song. Weak chorus, Ludacris’s weird yet iconic rap in the bridge, Bieber’s boy soprano really not doing anything for what emotional weight could have been there. But A. Nostalgia and B. I think there are some genuinely neat bits of arranging this song does. Especially in the second verse with the rhythmic change from the first which established the main pattern. The chorus, while weak, is catchy. And I do like the outro. Also the ... read more

Wiz Khalifa - See You Again

I can't deny the emotional power of that chorus, and this being the introduction of one of mainstream america's most confounding pop stars is interesting. Wiz Khalifa did what he was paid to do, but the difference in singing about death versus rapping about the movie is there to say the least. Only giving this above a 50 because the simple wording of that chorus hits just right when talking about grieving someone.

Michael Jackson - Thriller

What do you want me to say? It’s Thriller. It’s THE pop album. Also The Girl Is Mine is one of the best songs on here and Wanna Be Startin Something is the weakest.

Jack Johnson - Upside Down

C’mon guys, I can get a very clear sense of the age of the people rating this song by how many people are giving it 100. They’re correct but like I can still tell

Sabrina Carpenter - Manchild

Man, I did not really care for this song that much at first, but holy shit this song is so fun. Especially when the last chorus and outro hits I just wanna dance around like a crazy person as though it's a hoedown. Those horn/string stabs right after "never heard of self care/half your brain just ain't there" especially hit me right. Jesus this song grew on me.

Benson Boone - Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else
60

Todd putting this on his best list got me to check it out, like he said it’s not really best list worthy but it does have some great moments. Tbh I just wish it was longer, more cohesive, and let certain sections breathe. Like extend that outro another 20 seconds especially

Ben Fox - Castle
NR

I put this album out today, again mostly just trying to do a bit of preservation work tbh.

Vylet Pony - Carousel (An Examination of the Shadow, 'Creekflow', and its Life as an Afterthought)
82

What is it with Vylet Pony records starting on a lukewarm note and then completely blowing me out of the fucking water. I was thrown off by the electro-swing of Constellation Cradle, thought it was a little cringe, and then Brohoof is just casually the same sound done infinitely better. Crush Kill Destroy Swag is way better than any song with that title should be. The run from Flair For The Dramatic to the end is phenomenal though. Flair For The Dramatic especially hitting that sweet spot for ... read more

Vylet Pony - I Was The Loner of Paradise Valley

She can do better, I've heard better projects from her. The more traditional pop cuts here aren't bad but she seems at her best when she's in her atmospheric element towards the end of the project. However + is a perfect balance between the two, and might be one of her best songs.

Vylet Pony - can opener's notebook: fish whisperer
85

Will have to relisten fs, but this is a gorgeous record from start to back. Not lacking catchy moments, namely on ANGELFISH, but most of the rest of the record leans into its casual beauty. Slowly letting its tracks expand and follow their natural progression. I’m not that big on long albums, as in nearing an hour, but this one felt like it needed to be that long.

Aries - GLASS JAW
78

I’ve been following Aries for a while, really starting to get on board with the roll out for his last album which had higher highs but lower lows than WELCOME HOME. This album is probably his strongest yet, after a longer space of time between albums it feels like he’s trying to be more confessional than he has been. Especially on songs like ANESTHESIA which is probably the best single to come from this album. That or WICHITA BLUES, that one slaps. I mean this whole album bangs, but ... read more

Aries - WICHITA BLUES
89

Aries has been one of my favorites for a while, but his lyricism was never one of his strengths in my eyes. Even on my favorite song of his, DITTO, the lyricism was not what worked for me. On this song that's not the case, the focus on drug use and dependency is so very clear and poignant and the hook bangs so hard. I just wished the whole song went as hard as the hook and was just a bit longer.

Kanye West - Runaway
98

At times I do wonder if I misinterpreted this song when I first listened to it when reading other people's takes on it. The tag "self-hatred" is the correct one if for no other reason than the message in the hook, to me, being "I am a bad person, I have no intentions of changing, and for your own good, you should leave me." Kanye has still kept bits of that self reflection as his descent into madness has continued (I'll go to bat for BACK TO ME and BURN even if I ... read more

Radiohead - OK Computer

Hey this album's pretty good. Tbh my feelings towards this album are currently only shaped based on one listen. I enjoyed it, but Thom Yorke's voice isn't amazingly suited for tracks that rock the fuck out like Airbag and Electioneering. But when the band gets spacey and in their balladeering mode, this album goes hard. Exit Music (For a Film) is genuinely perfect. It'll take me a while to understand why this album is held in such high regard, but for now I can at least ... read more

Aries - BELIEVE IN ME, WHO BELIEVES IN YOU

Compared to WELCOME HOME I think this record is a little inconsistent, but that's not to say that this record isn't good. I think it has some of Aries' best work on FOOL'S GOLD, ETA, ONE PUNCH, and especially the third single DITTO. That song was a massive influence on my artistic sensibilities and production. I can't say this album had better hooks than WELCOME HOME but it's still solid.

Ninajirachi - I Love My Computer
87

Man what a fun fucking time. I listened to this in full the same day TLOAS dropped and what a good palette cleanser this was. Full, cohesive, just a hell of a vibe.

Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl

Opposite and Wood are kinda fun, but man this record isn’t anything

KSI - Thick of It / Low
40

Like it’s not good, and the memes from it have been pretty funny, but for this to be nearly as low rated as something like the goof tracks of Funstyle or anything by Tom Macdonald feels wrong.

White Town - Your Woman
100

I mean, what is there to say? Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics. I really wanna check out the rest of Jyoti’s catalogue now tbh. Shout out Todd In The Shadows for showing that this song exists. Yeah

Joey Valence & Brae - SEE U DANCE
88

Much like with JPEGMAFIA, JVB play off of Rebecca Black really well. It comes off like they really genuinely liked working together. The performances are tighter, and the production is still tight. Looking forward to this Friday.
