Carpenters - A Song for You
80

Karen Carpenter has a beautiful voice and while a lot of the songs weren’t written by the duo, she makes them her own. The title track is a highlight and the reprise at the end is so heartwarming like coming back home but the tone is so much more sad so it’s like a melancholic full circle.

Prince and The Revolution - Purple Rain

I don’t get it. I read the synopsis of the movie and that made the songs make more sense but honestly I just didn’t really like the sound. I don’t see how this catapulted him into superstardom. Oh but he plays all the instruments himself who cares. Highlight is definitely the title track. I don’t hate it and I can totally imagine how this could be someone’s fav album but wow wow wow it is NOT for me.

Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

I hate this. I hate it so much. I know it’s a unique sound and literally no one has ever sounded like this before or after but maybe that’s for a reason. Maybe if I got more of the samples I would’ve liked it more cuz there was a horror movie one and my ears perked up but I could not discern what song it was in cuz they all sound the same.

Pixies - Doolittle

This is just not my genre. I don’t think there is a world where I can enjoy this album. I do understand their high-low-high sound and how people could like it. Of course the couple songs that I enjoyed are the most “poppy” according to wiki. I can see how it lent itself to the evolution of 90s grunge and I can respect it for that.

The Pussycat Dolls - PCD

Saurrrrrr mid 2000s. Every song could be in a rom com soundtrack montage. A tumultuous group dynamic with Nicole singing most of the album but goddam there are some bops in here. Don’t cha is the clear standout but beep is one that deserves its recognition from the 🚬.

Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline

I think I just don’t like Bob Dylan. I don’t really have much to say other than that.

Carole King - Tapestry

Every singer songwriter wants to do this album. The hits, the feelings, the lyrics. Everything is STELLAR. Really effective at worming its way into your head with a melody and then the later grasping of the lyrics whew so good. Absolute highlight is ‘will you love me tomorrow’.

Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE

I don’t think I understand what this album is supposed to be saying. There were a couple songs about growing up rich or not growing up rich I couldn’t tell. I didn’t like the interludes they made it flow so poorly. Was that on purpose? If so, bad choice. Loved the song ‘pyramids’ so much definitely the best one for me by far. Production and storytelling was lacking on the other tracks.

It sounds perfect. The early 2000s of it all. Every band in the pop punk, garage rock, indie rock etc genres wanted to sound like this. You can hear it in every album released after. It’s like what discovery did to electronic music. Lovely guitar, lovely vocals , lovely lyrics. I find myself going back to it the most of the albums here.

Grimes - Visions

You know when you want to hate something someone creates because they suck on a personal level and lowkey they’ve fallen off artistically? That’s how I felt going into this. First listen I wasn’t into it but the second time, it all just hit me. This is a groundbreaking forceful album that tears apart genre and expectation. I feel transported listening to it. What she achieved was masterful and I now understand why it’s been so disappointing to see the downfall of Grimes. ... read more

George Harrison - All Things Must Pass

None of it sounds bad. I couldn’t really parse the songs. Especially the last 30 mins which is all instrumental. It’s a good instrumental but that’s not what I necessarily want to listen to. It’s weird to say but it kinda feels like the Beatles held George back. I can feel him through the album and I can see every band in the 70s listening to it before writing their own albums.

Remi Wolf - Big Ideas
70

Shocked when I realized this album was released 2 days before Noah recommended it to me. I liked it. But it sounds like a better version of a Haley Kiyoko album. Which is fine because I like Haley but I couldn’t get past that it just didn’t really sound original. I knew what was coming with most of the songs. She sounds good, production is good, can’t really fault that much but probably won’t go back to it.

Sudan Archives - Natural Brown Prom Queen

Why is this woman not more famous? This was such a bold experimental album. Genre-bending between pop, rnb, electronic, and afrobeats, I was blown away. Seemingly chaotic but after listening to a couple songs you can tell that she has the restraint so you know everything is deliberate. Do I know why every choice is made? Nope. Do I care? Nope. Because it sounds so GOOD. ‘Freakalizer’ makes me want to jump out of my skin because the beat and her tone sound so good.

Prince - Prince

I want to dance my ass off to the first part of this album. Then it gets a little melancholy but still somehow upbeat. The early 70s didn’t know what to do with him yet but this album helps me to understand how Prince got so famous. First song ‘I wanna be your lover’ is so sexy and dancey I wanna do coke and freak out to it in the club.

King Princess - Hold on Baby
75

As I’m in the alphabet mafia™️ I have heard of one king princess. I didn’t understand this album at first but it really hit me as I was biking through the city and hearing her be torn apart. Amazing album, a little repetitious but at least the repetition sounds good. ‘Crowbar’ is a highlight.

The All-American Rejects - When The World Comes Down
70

Ok. So this album is bad. But also, it’s not and it’s amazing and I need to defend it from haters. It’s got kinda formulaic song structures and rhyme schemes and it’s a little bit inconsistent. When it hits, it HITS (gives you hell). But when it misses, it misses (Mona Lisa). I will always always listen to ‘gives you hell’, one of the best songs literally ever, fight me. But the whole album? Not too sure.

Kacey Musgraves - Deeper Well
