I finished the J Cole discography this month and after doing so, I feel very confident after returning to this that this is his best work.

I feel like he is operating in a place he never did before and he wouldn't do again. Going back to this as someone that loved GUTS and is very excited for the new album, I'm not crazy about this. A couple tracks here still really work for me like Deja Vu, Brutal, and Good 4 U. I think GUTS retroactively made many of these ballads worse. Nothing on here is back, but songs like Enough For You, Traitor, and 1 Step Forward 3 Steps Back are so instrumentality sparce they feel tedious to get through. Pretty solid release, even if she sounds too glued to her inspirations. I find it difficult to say anything That's unique to this project because she sounds too much like other artists. There are some serious highlights though (that title track and Real Dog are both spectacular).

I'm not in love with it, but it is pretty good and I'm excited to see what she does next.
