What a late career gem from Isaac Hayes! No one was as cool and groovy as this man and he swoons to new heights on this album. Really like the way Hayes voice complelements the instrumentals so well and the production is top-notch. He clearly had not lost a step despite being in the 4th decade of his career. RIP groove master
Tremendous stuff! Listened to this one earlier today while reading a book of essays by Hanif Abdurraqib and it instantly became one of my favorite albums from this golden era of old school hip-hop. Tracks like Funky Beat, Growing Up, and I'm a Ho are incredible but nothing floored me like One Love. Overall, the production feels more fleshed out and complex and I'm glad I got ... read more
Classic Isaac Hayes! A man who created one of the most iconic film theme songs of all-time (for Shaft, a blaxploitation movie no less) goes on to create another one yet this time he stars in the movie himself! This theme song is like a leaner, meaner version of the laid-back Shaft one and The Pursuit of the Pimpmobile has one of the grooviest basslines ever. Just a great listen all-around!
Excellent wordplay & lyricism that’s backed by an array of fresh, new school beats, this Nas album is equally parts satisfying and refreshing. Esco Season!
In a lot of ways, I think I enjoy this album more so than Madvillainy. It’s funnier, lighter, and has amazing samples from superhero cartoons that I want to go watch the episodes they’re taken from. Ultimately, Madvillainy is damn near perfect while this one does have a few holes yet tracks like Rapp Snitch Knishes, Hoe Cakes, Potholderz, Vomitspit are easily some of my favorite DOOM songs. And I love that album cover!
