I took me 2 weeks to get one full listen through this beast of a record. Disc one isn't all that bad if you can get past the bad vocals, bad lyrics, bad concept, and bad mixing. Everything else is a complete snooze. This album is the ultimate result of billy corgan surrounding himself with yes men. He needs a producer or really just anyone to tell him that this stuff is straight up boring. The songs aren't even that bad. The structures and instrumentals are decent but that's all ... read more
so so cool that billy finally got jimmy and james back in the band and then decided to make an album with almost no real guitars or drums. this is easily the worst one so far. I guess I kind of respect it for being so drastically different from any other album in the catalog but it suffers greatly from discovering that new sound and refusing to try anything other than that sound. every song sounds the exact same. and it would be significantly less insufferable if it had a shorter 30 minute run ... read more
this album isn't good, BUT it does have some saving graces. unlike previous the last couple albums, the songs here are somewhat memorable (despite quality). it's super inconsistent and really only ranges from terrible to decently good, but the decent songs are much better than 99% of the previous era. it's really so inconsistent that its impossible to speak about in full so here's a track by track:
1.worst song ive ever heard in my life 2.mid but catchy and kinda reminiscent ... read more
this record made me feel nothing. we're at the point where the band's sound is essentially unrecognizable from their past work and indistinguishable from generic radio rock. it works as a sequel to Oceania, but sounds more like b sides and demos from the that record's sessions than anything focused and innovative. the songs are quite bland and repetitive with little to say other than those generic "girl like you" type lines that any joe with a home studio could write. I ... read more
I dont hate this album, but I definitely wouldn't say I enjoy listening to it. It's better than I was expecting (and much better than what came immediately before and after), but it really doesn't have much to say. It starts off really strong with the first two songs but after that it's just a boring drag. I've listened to this at least 6 times now and can hardly remember anything past those tracks. The lyrics are slightly better than on the last couple projects, but ... read more
slightly more interesting than it's predecessor, still forgettable
not offensively bad but extremely uninventive and forgettable
we are officially in car commercial territory. superchrist is kinda cool but only cause he barely sings
I'm pretty confident in my initial reactions to this one. Those initial reactions are telling me nothing positive. there are a few interesting moments here and there but nothing good lasts for longer than 10 seconds before billy ruins it with his shitty vocals or lyrics. I honestly can't think of a single song I really enjoy from this. it just feels so uninspired and plastic. where the lofi mix worked for machina II, it's absolutely horrendous here. the songs feel so flat and ... read more
pretty great goodbye to the original era, sounding this gishy it really brings the band full circle back to their roots
definitely unnecessary but the very experimental version hmm is appreciated
gem within a gem. no skips
bland. not bad enough to offensively bad but not good enough to remember five minutes later or ever revisit
likely the greatest gem of the bands career. while it has many flaws and is far from being prime material, it's still some real good songwriting and some obscure lore that make for an entertaining listen. unlike its predecessor, I didn't have to try to like this one. from my first listen it had me hooked. it just has that og pumpkins feel I was uselessly searching for in machina. nearly every song on here is better than machina 1. so why don't people like it. well I think there ... read more
Is everyone on this site listening to a different album? I mean it has its moments but for the most part I don't really get the hype. I thought I hated it at first until I realized it was really only a handful of tracks souring the experience for me. Actually let's start with that. After starting with one of the best openers in the bands history we get probably my least favorite song on the album. This really embodies everything I dislike about the record. It's extremely ... read more
