Ok, I've had a few listens.
First off, Paul Kelly's band is sensational. They're all top dog session musicians, and the album sounds great.
PK is also bucking the trend with his voice sounding as rich as ever. He sounds great at 70.
However, I just found this album to be ok. The songs all seem fairly paint by numbers PK. The magpie song is funny, but still a bit generic, ada may song is nice, but uninteresting. It's all just ok.

Well.... To be honest, the album/band shows a lot of promise. It's got reasonable songs, certainly above average for a band.... I'm including all bands in that statement, including crappy local bands.
I think this is their second album, each song has a reasonable hook in it.... It's certainly on the more lofi indie side of the spectrum, which I like.
But ultimately, the songs just aren't quite there.

I went into this with pretty low expectations. I haven't really liked anything the band has put out since the trials of van occupanther.
I was quite surprised after the first listen, it actually seemed good, and it gets even better after repeat listens.
It's also a proper album. The album has it's own sound....a lot of the tracks sound like they belong together as a collective work.

A really solid album. I stumbled across it after randomly searching what Ken Coomer ex Wilco was up to lately.... This is a gem of an album.
