Paul Kelly - Seventy
60

Ok, I've had a few listens.

First off, Paul Kelly's band is sensational. They're all top dog session musicians, and the album sounds great.

PK is also bucking the trend with his voice sounding as rich as ever. He sounds great at 70.

However, I just found this album to be ok. The songs all seem fairly paint by numbers PK. The magpie song is funny, but still a bit generic, ada may song is nice, but uninteresting. It's all just ok.

The most interesting song musically is ... read more

Styrofoam Winos - Real Time
60

Well.... To be honest, the album/band shows a lot of promise. It's got reasonable songs, certainly above average for a band.... I'm including all bands in that statement, including crappy local bands.

I think this is their second album, each song has a reasonable hook in it.... It's certainly on the more lofi indie side of the spectrum, which I like.

But ultimately, the songs just aren't quite there.

Would I sign them? Maybe on a cheap development deal to see if they ... read more

Midlake - A Bridge To Far
78

I went into this with pretty low expectations. I haven't really liked anything the band has put out since the trials of van occupanther.

I was quite surprised after the first listen, it actually seemed good, and it gets even better after repeat listens.

It's also a proper album. The album has it's own sound....a lot of the tracks sound like they belong together as a collective work.

They've thought about it.

I don't think there's really any weak tracks, or ... read more

Bendigo Fletcher - Two Things at Once

A really solid album. I stumbled across it after randomly searching what Ken Coomer ex Wilco was up to lately.... This is a gem of an album.

Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell
95

Just an incredible album.

Kathleen Edwards - Failer
90

Having loved Kathleen Edwards for years, for some reason I never made it back to listen to her debut. What a mistake that was.... This album is sensational.

An alt country belter!

Kathleen Edwards - Total Freedom
77

A great comeback album, not quite her best work but still a worthy addition to her discography, and well worth a listen.

Lucinda Williams - Lucinda Williams Sings The Beatles From Abbey Road
57

I really like Lucinda Williams, and to be honest, I was interested in hearing the beatles songs put through the Lucinda Williams machine.

But overall, does she add anything to these songs? Not particularly.

There's also a decent amount of auto-tune of the vocals which I find particularly off putting and quite disappointing.

It's an interesting listen, but only once.

Soccer Mommy - Evergreen
80

This album slowly gets under your skin. I really like it.

Bon Iver - SABLE,
80

I'm not overly familiar with Bon Iver's oeuvre.....but this is really good stuff.

Madison Cunningham - Cunningham Bird
50

Interesting concept for an album....but the arrangements are frustratingly bland on this release. They've essentially springkled a little bit of boring over the entire album. It just sounds a little too risk averse arrangement wise.

I really like Madison Cunningham's solo work, so looking forward to her next album.

Jake Xerxes Fussell - When I'm Called
85

Another sensational release from my guy Jake.
His music is just so damn good and comfortable. This is as good as his best, if not his best

Dawes - Oh Brother
55

I'm actually quite disappointed in this album. I loved all of the previous albums, and while this looks and sounds like Dawes, the secret sauce is missing.

Not loving the songs, it just seems like an album similar to the last album (popy rock with prog elements) but nowhere near as good.

Rickie Lee Jones - Pirates
NR

This is an absolute classic in my books.

Waxahatchee - Tigers Blood
75

I absolutely loved Saint Cloud.. This one doesn't quite click with me as much and I'm not exactly sure why.

I keep listening to it waiting for me to live out as much as Saint Cloud, but it's not happening.

The duet with MJ Lenderman is sensational though.

Stephen Malkmus - Stephen Malkmus
NR

Very late to this album, but what a gem it is. As good as Pavement in every way, just a great album.

Dawes - Misadventures of Doomscroller
90

I don't understand the middling reviewed about this album. It's essentially classic Dawes with a sprinkling of jam band and prog vibes..... I'm really enjoying it, a very welcome left turn from a band that very easily could've just keep releasing well crafted soft rock.

Big hints of 70s rock, lush harmonies, big guitar solos. I'm honestly surprised after a fairly lacklustre album before this.

The Innocence Mission - Glow
96

I think this album should be considered an absolute classic. The songs are incredibly strong, it captures a certain 90's indie charm. I only came across it in the lst few years, I just keep coming back to it.

The Lemon Twigs - Everything Harmony
87

This is a much better album than I initially thought.

I haven't come across the lemon twigs before... And they honestly look like a novelty band.... They dress in the style of the 70s, their hair is like they're from the 70s.....and their music sounds like it's from the 60s and 70s.

But make no mistake, this band is not all style with no substance. While the songs initially sound derivitive..... They're incredibly well written and beautifully arranged.

They wear their influences on their ... read more

Slaughter Beach, Dog - Birdie
70

Pretty good album really. A little bit style over substance at times, but mostly it's a pretty pleasant indie rock album.
