This album does something for me, I can’t / don’t even know what genre to label it, the mixture of country with synths and psychedelic rock is orgasmic for my ears. I get goose bumps just thinking about the grandiose synths that come roaring in on easily my favorite track “Make Art Not Friends”. This is album is so unbelievably good and I feel like it was ahead of its time and very underrated.
This album is so sonically pleasing, the rock influence to the touches of EDM influences on some tracks are so bizarre in a good way. I wasn’t familiar with JPEGMafia until this album and wow did it blow my socks off, I wasn’t prepared for how well of a producer he is. Great listen.
The album was definitely not what I was expecting from Tyler, it felt like it was supposed to be a kick your shoes off and have fun kind of album which kinda made me feel the opposite. Not sure what else to say other than meh.
After a long awaited return Sturgill Simpson comes back as Johnny Blue Skies, this album feels like lyrically some of his best work, with a tear jerker “One For The Road” and the most fun track being “Scooter Blues”. This feels like a rejuvenated version of Sturgill that’s willing to explore more into different kinds of country sounds. Short but an excellent piece of work by Sturgill.
Does it need to be 30+ tracks long? Absolutely not, if you cut what felt like half-assed tracks or scraps he just added for fun and kept all the great tracks it’d be a really good album. The highs are highs and lows are lows, a long anticipated wait for an album that should’ve been cut in half and then served to us to listen, not the worst thing I’ve ever heard but definitely no where near WLR status.
