Realising the drum break was in fact MC Ride screaming over the Rue the Whirl beat in the making of video was one of the highlights of my week, this guy's crazy
In early 2025 I listened to this to try and see if there was anything which could unseat Pizza Tower as the undisputed champion of 2023 music (an impossible task, I know). It occurs to me I would have had a very different year had the Willy Rodriguez been at the top of the year end lists at the time.
Dang, four months already? Guess I’ve really been [TITLECARD]
…the titlecard of the album, not the show, yes that one, I ain’t even watched it yet, nevermind
I am just posting this to briefly say that I hopefully will be back to writing reviews after my (very unearned) break from the site. (This message is addressed mostly to myself so I can attempt to hold some sort of commitment). While factors like a crap ton of work and an obsession with the game Blue Prince has deterred ... read more
This guy better hit it big
After their rearrangement of Frontier Psychiatrist introduced me to The Avalanches, I felt indebted to Nickster and felt very curious about the project that was announced for early this year - a sample-based album in the vein of the ones they remade using newer samples - and sure enough it is pretty fantastic.
From the start, it is clear that the way the samples play off each other is expertly done, and the album’s consistency and ability to introduce new ... read more
At the beginning of this year, I wanted to find:
- More Brazilian artists after what my ears experienced with Clube da Esquina
- Anything that resembled Sweet Trip after that album experience
- A long EP to rival Perverts
- Some projects from users of this site
Finding all of these in a single artist is not only crazy, it’s nothing short of ludicrous. This project is absolutely brimming with ideas, to an extent where it can almost feel overwhelming, but I am pretty chuffed that my search ... read more
Writing an absolutely scathing (well, slightly mixed) review to beat the ‘only ever rates things positively’ allegations
Despite my score, this is actually an album I enjoyed a reasonable amount, with it being obvious that there are plenty of interesting elements and ideas mixed in to each song. I am even relatively sympathetic to the main issue people have with the album, although I am not immune from its effect. To start with the positives, the overall concepts behind the album ... read more
Damn, this small EP packed a hell of a punch
I decided to listen to this as my first EP of the year, and it did not disappoint. Most elements here are strong, with the varied vocals between the two singers and the guitar melodies working very well together, but what really made this stand out for me was the atmosphere. It was so dang thick I could shave it with a cheese greater. Obviously, the dense production here contributes to this, but there were a lot of subtle decisions which enhanced it ... read more
Bit late to the party but honestly a really good start to 2026’s music
I wasn’t sure what to make of this album when I first saw it, but I soon realised that she was one of the collaborators on that sick Danny Brown project last year, which upped my enthusiasm significantly, so I gave it a listen. The first thing this album made clear to me (apart from the dietary choices of those involved) is the very effective lyricism. While it discusses the hoes more than, well, Scaring the ... read more
I will give this a high quality review sometime but first I would like to discuss the time that Amby from King Gizz came to me in a dream and said I should practice my piano skills more, after a semi -failed attempt at duetting with him, so I decided to play the six minute jazz fusion song from the Kirby game I gave the same score as this (the last part in real life). It went about as well as you'd expect.
First main review on this site, and a 4 sub special coming up.
This is one of those albums where the music is so outrageous you wonder how such a genre convergance hasn’t happened before. I almost instantly got the urge to blab at great lengths about it, hence it being the first review here. It was a pretty… a pretty (heh) swee[pun redacted]
The backstory goes something like this – in early 2025 I was listening to the Cipher radio station on my cellular device (yes, yes ... read more
