Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE
95

Although for me, they have the same rating, I honestly might prefer Channel Orange over Blonde. It goes for a different vibe, Blonde feels more personal to Frank and being about him and his life. Whilst Channel Orange, whilst still having insane levels of storytelling, seems to be just that, stories. This can be seen in tracks like Super Rich Kids, and Pyramids, which obviously don't seem to be about Frank himself. Regardless, the more upbeat nature of this album, combined with the amazing ... read more

Smino - blkswn
90

This would be 100 if it didn't drag on so much, but regardless, this is so good. R&B-esque beats with Smino's Neo Soul inspired verses serve a memorable project. Although it does drag on, we are rewarded by Amphetamine, with a verse from Noname to finish the album, it completes the overall vibe. This whole album is a beautiful melodic / mellow masterpiece. AND THE PRODUCTION FROM MONTE BOOKER IS AMAZING.

I HATE THIS ALBUM ESPECIALLY AT 2AM

Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist - Alfredo
92

I wanna eat the cover ART SO BAD,
but seriously, this is a must-listen album, you can feel the effort put in by Gibbs and The Alchemist through the project. The Alchemist has this other worldly ability to craft beats for any rapper to fit in a pocket regardless of their style, and he fits so well with Gibbs. Alfredo is a great name because despite its weird nature, it describes how I feel when listening to this. Sitting in an Italian restaurant in NYC with a mafia boss. Fitting since the ... read more

Obviously the appeal of such a project isn't for everyone yet I LOVE IT. Every song makes me laugh and appreciate the production heavily, it may seem a bit over the top and aggressive to some, yet the album is balanced and the production is sensational as always with a Gunn album. The only man that can get Joey Bada$$ and Tyler, The Creator on the same track and this album just keeps showing its charm as it ages. Its energetic, fun (especially Gunn's adlibs) and shows overall artistic ... read more

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Piñata

UM. THIS IS TOO GOOD.
Freddie Gibbs & Madlibs (MadGibbs) really cooked. Depsite it being recorded in 2011-13 this still holds up to this day. Every beat is amazing, ever verse is fun, the overall chemistry between these two is insane. I listened to this about a month ago for the first time and i've had every track on repeat since. Madlibs beats allow Freddie to get in a spot that produces really good work. The features also came through here, the one that stood out the most to me was Danny ... read more

ian - Valedictorian (Deluxe)

Realistically, this is nothing special, it feels like ian is taking in black culture and being a yeat clone at the same time whilst marketing as if that's not the truth. Regardless, the beats are pretty good but you can really feel the influence of others and the overall lack of personality presented through the project. Due to the nature of this mixtape, Im sure the lyrics are not intended to be anything special, yet there are still some fun lines especially the Marshawn Lynch one on Figure It ... read more

Kendrick Lamar - meet the grahams

If we're being realistic sonically, the song isn't that good, Alchemist beat and all, still. But THIS is history, Drake has been absolutely beaten within an inch of his life. Regardless of the daughter being true or not. This will tarnish Drake's legacy, and I can't imagine him coming back from this. The way he cycles through each family member, speaking to them about Drake, is kind of over the line. But neither of them clearly have any morals in the situation, so it just leaves us with pure ... read more

Drake - For All The Dogs

zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Bros been rapping about the same shit since 2012, ur have a kid at home get out the club ur almost 40.
Speaking of 40, it might be the highest score possible from this project.
Its extremely long for what it is, and isn't worth the listen.
Drake gets carried by features on this, e.g. Teezo on Amen and SZA on Rich Baby Daddy.
The same corny remarks he's been making for years are just boring at this point.

Watch the Throne for snobby white boys (me)
Peggy kinda overshadows Danny on like half the tracks, and Danny's mix (maybe intentionally) feels really shit on Lean Beef Patty.
Unfortunately I feel that they work best when seemingly separated like on Shut Yo Bitch Ass Up / Muddy Waters.
Apart from that AOTY for 2023
Side note: the lyrics on God Loves You are hilarious

Drake - Take Care
82

Only Drake album that isn't insufferable, some of his best works in this LP (which isn't saying much), pretty good storytelling on Look What You've Done, Marvins Room does a great job of doing what it is, and Headlines feels nostalgic.
Drake continues to still make reasonably ok music for boring mainstream rap sad boys
Fav songs: Look What You've Done, Headlines, The Ride
Least fav: Shot for Me, Practice, Camera / Good Ones Go Interlude

D'Angelo - Voodoo

I feel like this maybe the ultimate Neo-soul record, it embodies everything that is to expected from genre plus more. It seems like I cant dislike a D'Angelo song, everything feels unique each time and never get sick of him, his voice, and the instrumentation

Fav songs: Spanish Joint, The Root, Untitled (How Does It Feel), One Mo'Gin
Least fav: Impossible

clust.r - ever chance

Instrumentally I think its beautiful, in a chronically online way, but the vocals tarnish my opinion on it. However I do like how awkward and insecure it feels, with great writing, but I found it difficult to sit through the whole thing, at one point the production felt like it was consuming me and not in a good way. With that there is still some catching tracks, shows potential.
Fav songs: us pretenders, cache

Dijon - Absolutely
86

The live feeling of this album makes it feel immersive and lowkey makes me break down at some points. Big Mike's is a great intro, it may not be a lot of peoples cup of tea, but I really find beauty in its madness. Following it with Scratching which has a great 'Springsteen' like piano to it, as the project progresses it just keeps getting better. I think it reaches its peak with Rodeo Clown, honestly just heart wrenching, the subtle sobbing before the outro and the pain you can hear in his ... read more

Dijon - How Do You Feel About Getting Married?

Listening back to this EP I think its clear great music was to come with his LP release Absolutely. The vibes are great and his voice is insane man. I feel it may be very situation dependent on whether or not the listening experience is enjoyable. I listened to this at like 3 am on a balcony and I honestly felt like I was levitating.

Least fav: If it had to be one it would be jesse, I feel its a great little closer but that one off note makes me ... read more

Mk.gee - Two Star & The Dream Police

I think it does a great job at achieving the vibe it attempts to present, it doesn't really remind of anything I've really heard before, except for Dijon but that's cause they work together so often. The use of low guitar tunings allows for a unique sound to match with pretty good writing and great vocals.
I do still feel like some songs feel a little like they aren't complete.
Fav songs: Alesis, Are You Looking Up, Dream police
Least fav songs: New low, You got it
