Reading about this guy while listening made me cry.
To be human is to strive for intimacy.
This album isolates you just as its creators isolated themselves, moments of lfe are sparce and deliberate and in hearing voices speak you do not feel as if you are being spoken to rather you are listening in from the other side of a barrier. There is a certain hopelessness you are to experience, that is the beauty in this.
I own 2 copies of this album and only just realised it's the Death Cab for Cutie guy. This goes incredibly hard tho.
Best 40 minutes of nothing I've ever listened to
"He never came bAHck again" at 1:17 on miserabilia is my 2nd favourite Gareth voice crack behind the studio version of sweet dreams sweet cheeks at 2:56. I love this version of heart swells/ Pacific daylight time and I think it hits much harder than the studio version, there's a few songs that hit harder actually. They might sound exhausted but that's to be expected from such a long set. Great album and send-off to Ellen.
This album made me pick up the guitar that had sat unplayed in my room for 2 years.
Intimate, melancholic lyrics and stripped back instrumentation provides a comforting feel to otherwise dark topics. Feels very hopeless and lonely at times but that human nature of Elliott's is what makes his songwriting so likeable. A personal favourite of mine.
"Please just let me be the one to keep track of the freckles and the moles on your back"
Incredibly charming both lyrically and instrumentally, my favourite album and band.
