Black Eyed Peas - The E.N.D.
65

Lowkey a sneaky guilty pleasure album for me. Suprised to see it get so much flack, not sure why I thought it might have some better reviews. Yeah, it can be kinda tacky but it's a product of its time. As weird is it is to say/hear, I think this record kinda pushed the envelope, albeit maybe not very hard or even the right direction. I'm not afraid to say it: I think it was ahead of its time sonically -- in some ways. Like the orchestration and the synths are really not bad. ... read more

ear - The Most Dear and the Future

Indietronica Renaissance. Sounds like ear is still trying to find, figure out, and refine their sound. Minimalist basspunk. Enjoyed it though, see the flashes of potential for sure.

800 cherries - romantico
84

Warm and inviting. You can really hear the diy elements of this record. Also, the casio synth and roland jd800 are blended together seamlessly to develop that warm fuzzy sonic atmosphere. Marufuji does a great job on the vocals as well, playful with childlike innocence. The type of album that could be the soundtrack while you fall in love in the summer time.

Tiffany Day - HALO
88

I'm sorry Fantano, but you got it wrong. HALO is a GREAT debut album from Tiffany Day. I think it really has been a long time coming for her. She has such a good ear for the most satisfying drum textures as well as dynamic melodies/chord progressions to pair them with. When Tiffany Day catches a pocket, the hooks are just phenomenal. It's so interesting/unique to see her bring a singer/songwriter aspect to the indietronica realm.

The weakest part of this record, for me at least, ... read more

Fcukers - Ö

Enjoyed it quite a bit. First thoughts are: initially lumped fcukers into the bassvictim, snow strippers realm but after listening it seems like they're actually closer to an lcd soundsystem. definitely has that electroclash, basspunk identity but it carves out a unique niche with some playful synth details/textures. really cool basslines, i think thats jackson walker lewis right? love shanny wise on the vocals, her voice is concerningly seductive. and last thing i can think of, like the ... read more

Ninajirachi - I Love My Computer

WOW. Without a doubt, some of the best production I've heard on an lp this year. It's mixed so so well. First, the record is so loud, and the mix is so full at any given time but also it feels like each piece is given its own room to breathe. It's one of those things that you don't notice until it's done very well.

Each of the drums on this record are so layered, complex and infectious. Theres also a specific timbre on the bass synth that kinda exists through the ... read more

jigitz - All My Exes Live In Brooklyn

I think the mixing/mastering could be more polished. Definitely some really cool melodies and timbres though. I really enjoy the muffled/industrial synth sound; just feels like it's missing a little something. Maybe slightly stronger kicks, and some more dimension in the production.

Cameron Winter - Heavy Metal
88

Not that it matters, and it hasn't mattered for as long as I've been listening to music at least, but it is a sin this record wasn't nominated for aoty and another reminder that the people at the recording academy are unbelievably out of touch.

The spirit of his band remains at the core of the record, but sprinkled in and between the whole record but also within individual tracks are some pleasant plucky acoustic sonics. Winter's writing is as eclectic as ever and on this ... read more

Geese - Getting Killed
87

Instrumentals are minimalist, but arranged beautifully, and in a way that makes the arrangement feel more full and chaotic than the sum of its parts. Geese do things their own way, with a vocal performance from Winter that sheds any expectations and becomes something new altogether. The writing is cryptic, but at the same time you immediately understand what is being said.

When's the last time a group has swept up the rock music collective in this way? Getting Killed is out of left ... read more

Bassvictim - Forever

Ok, forget this record for a second. But, the rise of Electropop, Indietronica, Basspunk, Indie Sleaze Revival, Heroine Chic, yada yada yada, into the mainstream is kinda crazy. And I will be the first to acknowledge that I don't think any of it would be possible without The Hellp almost a decade ago and CharliXCX pushing it way into the mainstream in 2024. I think this is going to be the defining sound and cultural veil that coats this decade the same way grunge did in the 90s and y2k and ... read more

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights

Can a band from New York get more British than this? I think the thing that stands out to me the most is how strikingly different and similar they are from Casablancas and Co. And I know they get thrown together all the time, so sorry but how can you not? Yes, they're both from New York -- duhhhh. But listen to a track like Roland and tell me a twin headed guitar riff like that couldn't have been a throwaway on ITI or ROF.

The biggest difference is that the record is filled with ... read more

Arcade Fire - Funeral

Unreal. I adore everything about this album. Funeral is one of the best albums I have ever heard in my life, and it has quickly and easily become one of my favorites. Where to even begin with this record? I think I have to start with the arrangement and production. Oh My God. The swelling strings and orchestration on this record are so beautiful. It adds such a unique and dramatic facet to the arrangement that is paired so well with the vocal performances.

Speaking of, Will Butler does a great ... read more
