Hybrid Theory is an album that took control of me without me noticing. After I had listened to it for the first time, I found myself coming back to it the next morning on the bus. Then the morning after, and next thing I know It's the only thing that I'm listening to for a month. Even though they were heavily criticized for sounding "too mainstream" or "too corporate", Linkin Park at their prime were really something. For an album that doesn't have any ... read more
This is one of those albums that you can't stop listening to. Steal This Album! is going to be the third perfect score I'm giving to a System of a Down record : It is so damn addicting ! Every song on there is well crafted and the fact that most of those were scrapped tracks from toxicity shows just how much SoaD is goated.
Where this album shines is that it doesn't really get old for me, I find something new with each listen and so many songs are just incredible. A.D.D., ... read more
Gojira dropped their 7th studio album Fortitude in the middle of the pandemic. The shift in style that started to operate since Magma is very much visible here, with more "tame" songs such as The Chant and The Trails, as well as more slow-burn parts in the middle of tracks, that had become more present since The Way of All Flesh. As I said in my Magma review, I believe this album is where Gojira perfected this new style : slower songs don't feel boring on Fortitude as they all ... read more
Gojira tried to step out of their confort zone with this album, and while some think that they succeeded I personally believe that would have to wait until 2021 and the release of Fortitude. Magma feels very messy, and while some of my favourite gojira songs are on there, I am not a fan of tracks like The Shooting Star, Magma and Pray.
The highs on this album are incredible. I can't get enough of tracks like Silvera or The Cell that capture Gojira's essence while bringing something ... read more
What can I say about this album that hasn't been said before ? It is a quintessential record for metal and music in general, whether some like it or not. Coming out weeks before 9/11, Toxicity has accompanied the world during dark times with its shouts for rebellion against injustice and lies. The first track sets the tone, being almost a parody of System of a Down's signature style : Serj cites statistics about prison in the middle of Daron's (sometimes funny sounding) metal ... read more
System of a Down are masters of songwriting, this album is a perfect demonstration. The harmony between Serj and Daron on some of these tracks is shining more as the latter starts to take more space in vocals (which would unfortunately lead to tensions within the bands). Every song is a banger combining heaviness and melody, leaving you wondering "How the hell are they so good ?". The use of traditional armenian instrumentals like at the end of Radio/Video is done perfectly as always, ... read more
"Awaken, My Love!" is a bold departure from Gambino's usual style, going from pop rap to neo-soul/funk. He proudly displays his full vocal range, and tracks like Redbone can make you question if it's really him singing. This album really has some cool vibes, sometimes even being mesmerizing like in Boogieman's chorus.
The record is very solid overall : it's a good showcase of Donald Glover's ability to create engaging songs, but I personally think it falls ... read more
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a luxurious display of grandeur from Kanye West. He knows his ability to create art and he uses it to the fullest here. Every track is produced magnificently and it is easy to see that a lot of hours were spent on each of them. The creative use of acoustic strings as well as synthesizers show Kanye isn't here to reinvent rap but to perfect it, and it's clear here that he succeeded : this album has absolutely no skips (even Blame Game AND its ... read more
This album is a masterpiece. While I didn't think much of it at my first listen, it only gets better with time. Every millisecond, every nook and cranny of each song is thoughtfully put together, and you'll start noticing new things with each listen. Songs like Paranoid Android will take you through a rollercoaster of emotions, and you'll start wondering what black magic Thom Yorke had to summon to perfectly choose every instrument to use at the right time. Radiohead are masters ... read more
This is a beautiful album that takes you through all the emotions surrounding love. Wether that be joy, nostalgia, sadness or grieving a lost friend. Shing02's lyrics are poetic and he delivers them in a way that transports you to a beautiful state of mind.
Of course that wouldn't be possible without the incredible production by the late Nujabes. He has cemented himself as one of the kings of sampling. He has this wonderful ability to create dreamlike tracks that many resonate ... read more
Kanye throughout his career has always pushed music forward, for better or for worse. This album kickstarted a legendary career, with a saddening downfall. Young kanye delivers an impressive album truly ahead of its time, when people didn't believe in his abilities. A lot of amazing songs are on here : from the catchy chorus of Never Let me Down to the badass chant on Jesus Walks, every flow on here is immaculate and the production is masterful.
Only thing holding this album back are ... read more
This album is just banger after banger, Stupeflip truly are masters of their craft, always managing to write catchy or emotional songs through weird instrumentals and a cunning sense of humor. I can understand why non-French speakers might dislike this album as lyrics are a very important part of rap, and not understanding them really takes away from the experience. But you cannot deny that this album is extremely cohesive, every song seamlessly transitions to the next (Stupeflip are very good ... read more
