Pretty good project but in hindsight was the start of the tragic Impala downfall. He peaked instrumentally at Lonerism and vocally at Currents, and this was were the falloff began to set in.
I was fully expecting not to like this. None of the singles hit, the album has piss in the title, and why are the songs so short?! There’s no way this is a recipe for success.

As long as they’re not rapping it’s awesome. When they let the production speak for itself (which is thankfully most of the time) it really shows off how amazing and under appreciated Witch House is as a genre.
Why couldn’t more people have been like “man I really wanna rap over some witch house beats” in 2013
Listening to The Fall Off and not liking it that much made me realize that this is actually his best album.
I think Cole really nailed the balance between dense meaning and strong sonic appeal here. It’s also very short and digestible, a quality in J. Cole’s music I’m now more appreciative for than ever.
I think what we can learn from MUSIC and Don’t Be Dumb is that how long an album takes to make doesn’t necessarily dictate how good it will end up being.
As per the custom, Cole’s writing across this album is awesome and it really feels like he’s challenging himself here. But like, did this have to be nearly TWO HOURS long? Definitely not, considering how uninteresting most of the beats on this album are. By track 19 I was tired of hearing Jermaine’s voice.
