Feels more or less like a collection of experiments and possible new directions, rather than a fully formed project. Even after 23 years, it still sounds like Panchiko are finding their footing in terms of their sound, and that's fine and that's cool, I just wish people would stop giving these guys such a massive pass because they have a mildly interesting backstory. They're still in the experimental phase, and it's clear to see (or.. hear?) by listening to this. The vocal processing on a few tracks is a bit weird, and the drums sound really choppy and faint on the last track, with a piano section that's mixed unnecessarily high, and this awkward, clunky instrumental is the closer to the album? It's just a record filled with odd artistic decisions to me. It feels half-baked and like they rushed it out, but that's just my opinion. I know I've been pretty harsh in my criticisms of this, but these guys seem to be internet savvy enough to perhaps end up stumbling across my review, and if that is the case, I do hope they might be able to benefit and improve from my or other peoples' thoughts and opinions. Personally, I really liked "Gwen Everest", since it has a really good structure, controlled vocal performances, and a really interesting sound that hooks you from the start. I think if they really hone in on that sound and expand on it in the future they might be able to produce something really good, but I guess time will tell. A lackluster return, but an interesting one nonetheless.
