My hottest take since creating this account: this is Say Anything's best album
Works exceedingly well as a prelude to Devil and God, with the ongoing motif of woe-is-me self-victimization that would eventually lead to the realization that the demon is Jesse himself.
Gave this a full listen through for the first time, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. Every song is so devastating and haunting, especially now that I understand the religious references. Jesse's borderline obsession with Christian iconography is such a strong throughline for the whole record, and it makes you question whether or not he's cognizant of his messiah complex. After all, why else would Thomas want to see his hands?
