Phil Elverum, is one of, if not the best song writer of all time. He couldn't make a bad album if he tried. Mount Eerie from The Microphones (Which he would later adopt this album name for his own solo work) Is great, it's scary and its ethereal. The soundscape is distorted and crunchy and uses the sounds of nature to really pull you into his own fictious world. A lot of people do not talk about Phil's lyrics. Besides the musical and sound content of his albums, his lyrics alone could tell the story of all of his projects, if he made a book based on this album or "Night Palace" It would have the same effect. Everything done here is so unconventional. Weird tribal drum loops, that then get sampled. The lack of almost any instrumentation at some points just to leave his lonely, emotional vocals on display for the listener. Just to then after get into this harsh and loud noise rock that makes you want to get up and run a marathon through a forest while screaming at full volume. No other album or artist can make music that encapsulates this feeling and I'm glad. This is so uniquely (Samurai) Phil.
