This list will be a record of any thoughts I have on an album that is not significant enough for a review.
Some of the reviews for this read like Bülow's critique of Nietzsche's compositions. It is not that bad, in fact Jesse is one of my favorite songs he's made. The major problem is that his executive producers talked him into releasing a 20 track album, when it's obvious some of these songs clearly had more thought put into them than others, and those others should have been cut. Also, the features were generally terrible.
ECM Records probably has the largest catalogue of good music of any label.
"J'ai voulu tuer, je dois etre tue."
This makes me think of the winter and I have struggled to find music that can do that.
The only song I really listen to is tinted green, but I listen to it enough that it warrants the whole EP a positive score.
One of the more consistently good albums I've heard from the last couple of years, nearly every song is catchy, with Next Exit and Midwest being my favorites.
Heroes is one of my favorite songs of all time, I have listened to it hundreds of times, the music is not anything special but the lyrics describe the kind of images I'm always seeking in entertainment and art.
This album has two of my favorite songs I've heard this year, those being Dark Day and Dear 5, however the majority of the album is just too chaotic sounding for me. When I listen to music like this I really prefer an absence of drums and long drawn out acoustic strums or piano melodies, the gaps in between allow me to get from the music what I want, childish though it may be. I have been here and I hated it, but from a distance I have grown to love it.
Some of the singles he was releasing before this, along with the most recent mixtape, made me think he wouldn't make another collection of songs as good as The Dynasty album, but this is actually better. He is the best rapper ever for the simple reason that I rarely listen to rap anymore and yet he is consistently one of my five most played artists every month and has been for years now. It might be as simple as he is the only rapper, other than Kanye, who is actually funny.
This is about as high of a 75 as I can give without it being an 80. This is considerably better than his last solo album and more what I wanted from a Dietrich album without the rest of 42. Songs like Gotham and Schatten are so catchy and FlammenMeer and Ballon D'or shows how unique he is compared to other "drill" rappers. I still hope he someday makes a song that sounds more like STAUB again.
I am not surprised that I enjoy this album, but I am surprised I enjoy it this much. It is my most listened to album by far this year. I tried to investigate why I liked it so much and ended up writing three different reviews for it, all of which were sufficiently specious enough to not post. In the end all I can write about this album is that it reminds me of a time in my life I hated while I lived it, but that I enjoy greatly as a memory.
A song about being in East Asia from the voice of an Irish-American with blonde hair. The only way this song would be more relatable is if it was focused on Korea instead of Japan, and the lyrics were about wanting to leave instead of wanting to stay.
I will always appreciate any entertainment that is aware we live in especially hateful times and configures any allusions to the usual reprieves, such as love, pleasure, or religion, into this understanding. This album is really just asking for honesty, for things to happen as they should. Love should not just be exclusionary, but also sadistic and where there is hate, there should be violence, anything less is a lie.
"We are of the opinion that harshness, violence, enslavement, danger on the streets and in the heart ... that everything evil, frightful, tyrannical and predatory in the lives of human beings serves to exalt the species more than does its opposite." I would amend this only to say that it is the awareness of this that exalts the species and that is why I like this album.
They are probably my favorite band currently making music, I have enjoyed almost every song they've released so far, the only problem is I'm getting older.
"I have a small building lot, men of Athens, and a fig-tree is growing in it, from which many of my fellow citizens have already hanged themselves. Accordingly, as I intend to build a house there, I wanted to give public notice to that effect, in order that all of you who desire to do so may hang yourselves before the fig-tree is cut down."
I really only listen to the songs featuring Ivy Knight, which have some of my favorite female vocals I've heard, the delivery is just perfect. Unfortunately, the only times in which she is utilized well is this and the song she did with Evanora Unlimited, which is even better than anything on here. I wish there were more songs where the vocal register and range of a girl is used within a context of apathy or cynicism. 2021 by A.G. Cook being another great example of what I'm looking for. I don't know what it is exactly, but a death-wish reflected back to me through a girl's extinctionist affectation has long been one of my favorite aesthetics. However narcissistic it may be, women will always be most endearing as the lunar principle to a suicidal sun.
"There is no beast, no rush of fire, like woman so untamed.
She calmly goes her way where even panthers would be shamed."
Favorite song of the year, by far. I have listened to this so much its minutes played is equivalent to that of some of my favorite albums this year.
From the few reviews I saw for this, I guess I am to assume people ripping off Mk.gee is a bad thing. All I know is everyone who has copied him, or been "influenced" by him, has made some of the best songs I've heard the last couple of years, and this is no different.
This is probably the best year of music in some time and of course Dietrich was a big part of that, releasing two great mixtapes on either side of the year. Blokka Solo is the only other rapper I have enjoyed this consistently for years now.
The song is great, but the reason I came back to this site just to rate it a 100 is because of the music video. I know its just a simple "lyric video," as they called it, but I can't get enough of it. It probably says a lot about my narcissism that I am so easily won over by faces being obscured.
The singles for this are the best songs which is never a great sign. Still enjoyable, but really Reno Moon and Crush carry my rating. Those two songs are exceptional.
It is always disappointing when an artist or band strikes magic with one or two songs and then just can't seem to do it again. Especially when those songs are as good as they are.
Quickly became my 2nd favorite artist off one EP. I don't know what it is about this style but I have enjoyed no music, other than Lil Ugly Mane's, more in my life. Every song he has made in this style, even going back to Age of Information, is a 100. The EP last last year was so good I haven't even rated it on here because I want to write something about it but it is too good for that.
I still have no idea why it is that I took such a liking to Islam. I have no desire to convert and I don't have faith of any kind, yet for some reason one of my few passionate interests over the last half decade has been reading about Islam. My introduction was "A Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam" and then I read "The Essential Rumi" and I have never looked back. Of course I am partial to Sufism and North African/Andalusian culture, and maybe living in these parts of the world gives me some draw, but I don't really know. There is just something about all of it that I can't stop coming back to and I am grateful to Eduardo Paniagua for making so many albums that cover a music niche I'm sure only a small amount of people care about.
Had never heard of this guy before this, and when I went back to some of his earlier stuff I was disappointed, because nowhere else does he seem to have as good/catchy a collection of melodies as on this. The whole EP is good, but my favorite songs by far are "ANIMAL" and "IN YOUR EYES," which have two of the best moments I've heard in music so far this year; those being when he sings the titular refrain on the former and when he sings the hook on the latter.
I don't usually like describing music by the "atmosphere" it created, because I always think that, that means nothing, but I will give myself a pass here because I can't think of any other reason I like this album so much. It isn't just the beats but the--sometimes nonsensical--lyrics also contribute to this. It's so European which will always be something I enjoy when done tastefully, because of memories growing up there as a young kid. I don't know if I will ever again be in Europe, it's been so long at this point and more and more each day I am convinced I will never be able to will myself to leave America again, but thankfully music like this exists, so I can experience a eudaemonic version of a place I only have fond memories of.
When I come to this site to rate things I am consistently surprised by what doesn't even have an album page yet. How is this not popular enough that someone who uses this site hasn't added it yet? It isn't some kind of revolutionary music, but most music isn't, and most of that other music isn't this good. Similar to the Nick Wagen EP this year, I went back and listened to their previous music and wasn't as big a fan, but this is great.
The "a-ha" adlib is so good. Dietrich is still definitely my favorite German rapper, but this guy has come out of nowhere and his first album might be a better collection of songs than Dietrich has put together, despite Dietrich having far and away the best German rap song I've heard. The samples throughout are great, they not only are worked seamlessly into the beat, but more importantly, they all match the vocals of b52, I'm not sure how they did that so well, because I still don't know what it is about his voice and rapping style that I like so much.
