There's so much to love about the song. The amazing guitar riff that starts off the album. The drum machines with just the right timbre to them. The way Prince harmonizes with himself. That synth solo at the end. One of the greatest works of pop music, and probably the best showcase of Prince's genius.

Despite every Prince album including the one this lies on having some of the worst sounding instruments I've ever heard in my life, Purple Rain was the one time he was able to fully work through that and make a good front-to-back album. The best sounding song on the album is When Doves Cry, and while my heart lies with I Would Die 4 U, this track is absolutely brilliant. "When Doves Cry" is a song that'll always hold a special place in my heart since it is the first Prince song I heard & the one I truly fell in love with instantaneously. The song's structure is perfection.
