On one level, Simple Things is a great CD to simply sit back, relax and literary chill-out to, like on “In the Waiting Line” and “Destiny.” On the other hand, it sometimes gets dangerously close to coming off as average R&B, like on the title track.

More like jazz on acid than acid jazz, Simple Things can be hallucinatory yet eminently listenable; it's chill-out music with a little something for your mind as well.

If you're the kind of forgiving soul that can get past Zero 7's dalliances with copyright infringement, and if you have a CD player that can skip over the vocal tracks, Simple Things is a decent soundtrack to get your freak on.

Ranging from amazing to mediocrity, the album provides the perfect background to kick back with a fat cigar in between your lips.

This is how I wish Air sounded to me. No disrespect to Air whatsoever I do like their albums like Talkie Walkie but those Frenchies have NOT made an album that sounds this good. But anyways the debut album from Zero 7 in Simple Things is an amazing Downtempo album that blends in Trip Hop and Lounge music. This record is one of the downtempo records that gives essence to its genre. Very chill and jazzy, while also being somewhat introspective. I just thought it was almost too grounded in the genre at times, and that the record was afraid to explore what was outside of its comfort zone.
