For the most part, it sticks to his tried-and-true format of rock-influenced EDM anthems filled with sawtooth drops, warm guitars, and passionate vocals.
I honestly expected this album to be worse from first glance and yes, it is painfully cliche often and a lot of this just sounds like throwback NCS songs for gamer highlights (what a musical abomination), but this turned out to have some okay songs and actually showed some variety in it's production, but ultimately this is still kind of your run of the mill melodic EDM album.
Even if I have never been an Illenium fan, I was still mildly curious to hear what Odyssey would deliver, as dubstep has earned a bit of a critical re-evaluation in recent years, while Skrillex has been writing some of his most interesting music as of late. I would honestly have more fun listening to some super trashy brostep over this however, and this album could not even deliver that. ILLENIUM’s 6th full length offering hasn’t interested me in the slightest. this album is full of some very lacklustre production that carries next to no emotion for the next part, and the vocal performances across the record weren’t all bad (though some just didn’t suit the production at all).
on a related note, the feature list for this album is pretty strange too.. Bastille, Ellie Goulding, Kid Cudi and Bring Me The Horizon?! the vocal ... read more
Swedish House Mafia if all the songs were halved in length and had subpar EDM drops. It had it's moments as some features were better than others. Bring me the horizon were the highlight for sure, but compared to the rest of the songs feel like an outlier. Overall better than something like a Tiesto or Skrillex so that's some praise.
Gee, he really is the Taylor Swift of Melodic Dubstep, isn't he?
There’s something almost frustrating about listening to ILLENIUM at this point in his career. You know what you’re going to get, but at the same time, you keep hoping for just a little more than that. And with "ODYSSEY", that push-and-pull feeling is stronger than ever.
Now I've let this album REALLY sit, haven't gave it a listen since it came out. And yet, in typical ILLENIUM fashion, I ... read more
