Spill Magazine

The Boys of Dungeon Lane is an album of gems.

100
The Telegraph

The Boys of Dungeon Lane is a joyous late-career reminder of McCartney’s melodic genius.

90
AllMusic

McCartney's gift for hummable pop songcraft endures and more than one of these songs is likely to pop into your head days after listening. Yet, it's all those little moments on The Boys of Dungeon Lane and the way McCartney brings his past to life that makes the album one of his most affecting.

90
Rolling Stone

The Boys of Dungeon Lane is a richly nostalgic trip that proves this legend is still as creative as ever.

85
Hot Press
The overblown pop-rock of ‘Ripples On A Pond’ and ‘Come Inside’, and the ‘70s’ chug-a-lug rock of ‘Lost Horizon’, remind us that Macca was in Wings too, but overall, this is a welcome return from the master.
80
The Independent
Aided by producer wunderkind Andrew Watt, McCartney delivers some of his most personal and introspective songwriting in years, and makes amends for a few recent misfires.
80
Far Out Magazine
On one hand, The Boys of Dungeon Lane is a good but not great collection of songs, but on the other, also perhaps the best album ever recorded by an 83-year-old?
80
Rolling Stone UK
In looking back at his storied past, Paul McCartney offers a record which proves he's never been more alive.
80
The Irish Times
A postcard to his younger self, this album is a fine addition to the McCartney canon.
80
Record Collector

The Boys Of Dungeon Lane does everything a Paul McCartney album should do. The vulnerability in his voice adds a peculiar charm: it’s a man looking at an ever-decreasing road ahead with his trademark optimism.

80
The Arts Desk

Tenderness abounds on this intimate, reflective set.

80
Mojo
The melodic gift and residual optimism ultimately carry the day aided by the canny ear for a guitar riff that characterised Wings.
80
Uncut
Some songs, like "Ripples In A Pond" (A pop song for his wife Nancy), hit with the contemporary Andrew Wyatt wallop, which is very much why musicians in their ninth decades so revere his production; but as ever, it's the bits where McCartnet lets appearances be damned that work out best.
80
The Guardian
From nostalgic returns to his Liverpool childhood to a crazed Glastonbury fantasia, these are songs written with real purpose and a master’s finesse.
80
NME

With a little help from Ringo, pop’s twinkly eyed granddad gets nostalgic on an album that also finds him pushing forward musically.

80
musicOMH

Music is a drug, so they say. The Beatle/living legend is in his ninth decade, but on his 20th solo album he shows no sign of giving it up.

73
Spectrum Culture

With a mixture of humor and poignancy, The Boys of Dungeon Lane works as a series of sketches, of half-remembered incidents elaborated on with the help of either unlocked memories or imagination, whichever works better in the moment.

72
Pitchfork
Balancing raucous guitar boogie and dreamy acoustic cuts, the 83-year-old legend shows off his considerable charm and impeccable songwriting chops on an unabashedly sentimental look back at his youth.
70
Classic Rock
A mixed bag from arguably the world's greatest songwriter.
67
Paste

The most exciting moments on the Beatle’s twentieth solo album are adventurous yet reflective, and he strikes that sweet spot many times.

60
The Line of Best Fit

His newest memory work, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, promises listeners “the story before the story”, but ends up excavating old tricks and administering pop palliatives.

An amazing album especially considering he is 83 and he has been writing and performing music since he was 15. Obviously he has lost his voice a little but nevertheless its still a superb album
