It suffers hard from just lackluster beats that don't really go anywhere like on "The Ruler's Back" but a little worse. "Behind Bars" carries this album so hard.
Slick ricks 3rd album is a testament to storytelling just like his other albums. His writing is fantastic, I thought all alone was a generational storytelling song. The production has a lot of really dark saxophones and semi jazzy sounds which complement slick ricks style and presentation nicely. I also thought slick Rick was great at writing his hooks. The album is only 11 songs and 40 minutes long, which is pretty much the best length for an album in my opinion.
Worth a listen
It's amazing how good it is even though most songs had just voices, and producers had to make beats around the vocals, pure genius Slick Rick is
It's got some good tracks (with Behind Bars being the obvious highlight), but some of the subject matter can drag with frightening consistency. It does however have consistently great production, and Slick Rick's signature smooth delivery does kick dick. Overall, very good album.
Classic 90s hip hop album. Slick Rick has a soft, soothing voice, which, accompanied by groovy jazz instrumentals, makes Behind Bars a nice album. Nothing mindblowing, but definitely worth a listen, especially the first half.
My favourites remain Sittin' In My Car, Cuz It's Wrong and Behind Bars.
