Soft Machine's collective skill is hyper-complex and refined, as they are extremely literate in all fields of musical study. Fourth is the band's free purging of all of that knowledge, woven into noisy, smoky structures of sound.
Criminally underrated, visibly overshadowed by it's predecessor, but it's really on par. Actual perfection
Having listened to Soft Machine’s first four albums, it’s been very interesting to see their evolution from their psychedelic roots to where they land on this album. Through their second and third albums, they leaned more into jazz, and became jazzier the further they went, and now they’ve fully embraced jazz fusion with this album.
