Even if Clor sometimes seem too kitschy for their own good, Clor is an appealing debut with a sound that may not be exactly new, but is fresh and fun.
They might not always make sense. But even when logic gets fuzzy, the beats stay crisp, and that, Clor know, is the best way to be.
Even when it runs out of creative juice, Clor gets by on energy and production alone until the juices get flowing again. At its best, it captures all the fun of vintage synthpop and new wave, with very little of the cheese.
Although they have some serviceable indie disco hits, Clor are merely the latest production line band to explore a niche in the market, though their attempt at nerdy, computerised post punk rubs one off as a flawed blend of, of all things, The Downward Spiral and Zwan.
Clor has a number of entertaining and inviting songs in the final tracks, but nothing that quite lives up to first four tracks.
I found this band because Luke Smith was involved with making Depeche Mode's Sounds of The Universe and Foals' Total Life Forever. The indietronica nature and dance feel of this album is right up my alley. I wish this project had more releases. They have a charisma and excellent productiton that make them stand out in the sea of similar releases during this time period.
