Sufjan back at it again with another beautiful, epic, electronic ballad that could either be about coming out as gay or about putting the right "spiritual food" into yourself, for your soul:

"All the shit they try to feed us

Hellodecatur compared this to FKA Twigs and that's honestly a perfect comparison. It seems that Sufjan is trying to go for a more R&B and synthpop inspired album, with the controversial Video Game (a song I really liked) with its very synth-y instrumentals and repetitive lyrics and the grandiose closer America which seems to be a huge political statement and a look into this new sound. I present to you... SufKA Twigstevens.

Absolutely an improvement over Video Game, even if that's a pretty low bar. The repeating motif "come on baby give me some sugar" is inescapable, but I actually don't mind it (at least for the radio edit). This project is on track to be pretty much on par with Carrie and Lowell so I'm, uh, what's like the neutral version of excited?
I have mixed feelings on this one. I've certainly liked it, but that's not exactly what i expect when i hear Sufjan Stevens' music. I'm still hopeful to be proved wrong once the record is out, but this drift into a more "Age of Adz" style with electronic sounds just doesn't seem to fit with me
The third single from Sufjan's new record is out and it definitely doesn't lower my expectations.

Like Video Game and America, this song relies on electronic and ambient production and Sufjan emphasises repetition mainly in terms of his lyrical content.

I really love the production of this single. Like America, it feels a little haunted but in a beautiful way. Especially the chorus stands out.
