Hellodecatur compared this to FKA Twigs and that's honestly a perfect comparison. It seems that Sufjan is trying to go for a more R&B and synthpop inspired album, with the controversial Video Game (a song I really liked) with its very synth-y instrumentals and repetitive lyrics and the grandiose closer America which seems to be a huge political statement and a look into this new sound. Sugar, to me is the best song of the three. While America is amazing, its replay value isn't all that ... read more

Sufjan back at it again with another beautiful, epic, electronic ballad that could either be about coming out as gay or about putting the right "spiritual food" into yourself, for your soul:

I present to you... SufKA Twigstevens.

Absolutely an improvement over Video Game, even if that's a pretty low bar. The repeating motif "come on baby give me some sugar" is inescapable, but I actually don't mind it (at least for the radio edit). I have mixed feelings on this one. I've certainly liked it, but that's not exactly what i expect when i hear Sufjan Stevens' music. I'm still hopeful to be proved wrong once the record is out, but this drift into a more "Age of Adz" style with electronic sounds just doesn't seem to fit with me

The third single from Sufjan's new record is out and it definitely doesn't lower my expectations.

Like Video Game and America, this song relies on electronic and ambient production and Sufjan emphasises repetition mainly in terms of his lyrical content.

I really love the production of this single. Like America, it feels a little haunted but in a beautiful way. Especially the chorus stands out.

I can't wait for the Ascension and will patiently wait till the 25th to see what Sufjan will ... read more
