Picking over the bones of her recent musical fascinations, East End multi-instrumentalist Marika Hackman has chosen some daunting works to tackle on this selection of sombre interpretations, from miserablist troubadors such as Elliott Smith, Sharon Van Etten and Edith Frost to the hyper gloss blast of Grimes, MUNA and Beyoncé.

NME
’Covers’ offered Hackman a way to stay creative without pressuring herself to find the inspiration to write a record from scratch in this stifling time.

No Ripcord
Both creative in the diversity of source material, as well as making the songs her own, Hackman’s covers album ends up one of the finest of the year.

Nothing here will quite fulfil the satisfaction of her original work, but as a fun, thoughtful way to ground oneself during quarantine, ‘Covers’ is an audition that is guaranteed to see her through to the next round.

Covers is a magnificent experiment, filled with a mellifluous melancholy, bittersweet on the ears.

The Sydney Morning Herald
Each cover feels like a sincere love letter to the original artist, with Marika paying homage to songs she’s admittedly obsessed over. The record is as ambitious as it is intimate, as she showcases her talent with an unexpectedly adventurous twist.

The Forty-Five
‘Covers’ offers new insight into both its songs and its singer.

Under the Radar
All from the comfort of her parents’ bedroom, Hackman gives us a glimpse into her quarantine playlist. And even more impressive, she tangibly shows us why these songs are so special, breaking them down to their core, and letting them speak for themselves.

I didn't like much that marika's "any human friend" album. However, this album is so simple and so good also, it appears as a simple quiet album but I can listen to the complex notes in the background, very integrated and sophisticated.

Marika puts her own spin on some great tunes. May not be totally original but she does the tracks so well it’s still enjoyable. Won’t be coming back to this often but I still appreciate it
