Drowned in Sound

From start to finish Bones plays like a coagulated, cosmic soup, a universe tangential to Flying Lotus’s Cosmogramma that bursts and bristles with unlikely sonic companions, brought to order only by recurring musical motifs, the dominant lyrical themes of identity and isolation and the odd pop hook.

Paste
The result is an eclectic monster of an album that moves on its own, lurching forward with a new perspective, in exploration of new terrain.
80
NME
'Bones' has become a future-facsimile of Polish composer Henryk Górecki's classical masterpiece 'Symphony Of Sorrowful Songs'. Pretentious, yes, but wonderful.

AllMusic

Listeners who can withstand or embrace the heaviness will find an inspiring amount to appreciate. Bones is inventive, unsettling, imposing, and utterly arresting.

The Line of Best Fit

Bones is a remarkable, chameleonic entity. Drawing on everything from Bach chorales to dubstep via 90s R&B, Lott, Bhatia and Chang take tracks to completely unexpected places - which means that, even after several listens, Bones remains a record which keeps you on your guard.

72
Pitchfork

Lott has a tendency to pile his influences in a way that can sometimes feel suffocating, like confetti crammed into a party popper, and on Bones, his bandmates pulled the string while also adding their own crinkled strips of color to the explosion.

70
The 405
There isn't much detail or nuance to pull from repeated listens with everything being so flashy, but there are few artists that come off as bold.
60
DIY
Though ‘Bones’ is almost as dramatic as a standard week on Albert Square - occasionally to its detriment - it’s also impossible to fault this album’s single-minded pursuit of sheer, maxed out saturation.
60
The Skinny
Having previously flexed such diverse sonic muscles, the band now tread a more familiar (albeit proven) path, too practiced to elicit that same frisson, but effective nonetheless.
60
The Guardian
Sometimes symphonic pop doesn’t have to be so packed to have punch.
50
Tiny Mix Tapes

Like a skeleton, Bones is neither fixed nor free; its purpose is locomotion as much as self-containment.

50
Consequence of Sound
These tracks repeat their mini-maximal melodies to the point of receding into cacophonous gray noise in the background.

PopMatters

Bones is such a profound step back for Son Lux that it’s hard to see the group recovering. These are the bones of something once promising.

It’s time to finish listening to son lux. I started last year and never finished so I figured I should get back to it.

This album is weird because there’s a lot of songs that are so boring to me and then other songs that are great and idk how to feel about it.

this is Day One of my own personal album marathon, where I listen to albums that have songs featured in Drum Corps International (DCI) marching shows, to not only combine my interests but to also expand my taste in genres.
This album features "Change is Everything", which was not only featured in the Bluecoats's 2024 program, but was also the name of their winning show.
The sound to this album is great, its very atmospheric but also feels very experimental. in like a good way. ... read more

What the hell? This is so underrated! Easily one of Son Lux's best albums. I absolutely love the experimentation on display here! There's a lot of really interesting textures on display, and I really like the mixture between classical and electronic elements, they mix together in a lot of really fun ways on this album. The beats are also super super cool, I love the way each of these songs flow. There's a lot of really dramatic tension everywhere, and I think some people might ... read more
