DeGraw could stand to be livelier and not as insistent ... but Sweeter benefits from greater textures in his surroundings, stronger hooks in the melodies, and, for once, a sensibility that doesn’t sacrifice the present for the sake of paying respect to the past.
There's a half-dozen good ones on his fourth full-length Sweeter (check the title track). Too bad the other half's weighed down by painfully mopey, girl-done-left-me blues.
Much of Sweeter is too pedestrian, with DeGraw's fourth album failing to be markedly different from the rest of his back catalogue.
If there’s a defining thread to this whole affair, it’s that all this isn't really anything new. Even if all you’ve heard of DeGraw are his breakout singles of “Chariot” and “I Don’t Want To Be” from his debut album, chances are you’ll still find the stuff on Sweeter pretty familiar, but in the worst sort of way.
First 4 songs are pretty good then the rest kinda drift off into nothing super interesting but this thing could've been really good with a little more effort.
I hate the album cover. dude looks into the distance like he's thinking 'bout sumn with the village inn font over it. ugh.
some good songs, but not my GDG fav album by any means.
