Taken altogether, the record is a shimmering snapshot of a perfect moment in time where the band, the songs, the sound, the production, and even the surrounding culture all teamed up to produce an album that's about as flawless as one could imagine.

Suede plunder the styles of their pop-fop forebears and rock your last nerve like a fabulously inappropriate prom date.

Suede is everything that great British pop stars used to be--compelling, confounding, infuriating.

Musically, Suede have created a sound-world that is uniquely theirs. The glam comparisons notwithstanding, their shifts from raucous garage rock to luxuriant sweetness, sometimes within the same song.

Suede succeed because, like their spiritual predecessors, they've found a few irresistible songs to sing.

If you have never heard of Suede, the Britpop act that were active around the same time as Blur and Oasis, you would be likely forgiven by most music enthusiasts. As a member of the Britpop “big four”, along with the aforementioned bands as well as Pulp (more on them later), they were arguably the most forgotten of the four groups. But the debut by Suede is a pretty good debut album that sees a young band trying out a sound and wearing their influences on their sleeve. These influences include the baggy scene of the 80s and early ... read more

Not my absolute favorite britpop record, but a very cool debut that's also a great early showcase of what would become the dominant sound for British pop rock of the following few years. Predating the genre's revolution with other landmark albums Parklife and His 'n' Hers by a full year, they really did manage to get in early even if singles from the aforementioned Blur and Pulp were already making waves by early '93.

Plus, while the other major groups were mostly ... read more

this was cool. maybe not my favorite thing ever, his voice can get a little grating sometimes, but i liked a few cuts. the drowners was absolutely phenomenal, i also quite liked animal nitrate and she's not dead. the only real dud here was probably the closer.
