Joni knew exactly who she needed to back her for this show. Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, and Jaco, absolute heavyweights. They played so well together that I'd akin it to a fusion choir. It's a great setlist too, mostly consisting of songs from Summer Lawns, Hejira, and her latest at the time Mingus. Mingus was a conclusion in several respects: Charles Mingus’s final project before his death, and for Joni Mitchell, her last album of the 1970s as well as the closing chapter of her jazz pentalogy that began with Court and Spark in 1974. If Miles of Aisles was for Joni's Folk material, then Shadows and Light is for her Jazz-Fusion material. This project is very laid back and a lot less densely packed than I thought it would be as it mostly relies on Joni's vocals with a heavy amount of bass to provide a platform for her to elevate herself. This album contains songs from The Hissing of Summer Lawns all the way to Mingus and has one Lady of the Canyon track which could be argued to be her first ever Jazz-Fusion track ... read more
